1990 760 auto overdrive only in park 700 1990

90 760 automatic overdrive will only function when in park , i have to stop the car and put it in park to put it in or out of overdrive ,no response at all in any other position ???

    You have me completely confused.

    This is an automatic so it defaults to the "OD engaged" status which means the dash light is off. this is assuming the transmission is an AW70/71 which think was the only auto offered worldwide for that year. if you click the button you are actually locking out OD.

    Does the car actually go into overdrive at speeds over 38 mph under light load conditions?

    When you push the switch can you hear the OD relay behind the ashtray clicking?

    There are basically three things that can go wrong with the wiring but your description matched none of them.

      the relay can be heard when pushed but only in park ,if i press it in and out about 5 times it no longer functions or clicks , , yes it does go into overdrive and will also stay out of overdrive when you lock it out in park but you cannot change the mode until you go back to park ,would the relay cause this ,and if the relay is good should you be able to clic in and out numerous times in succession without fail.? are there any generic relays one can use . i have opened the cover but find no flaws.

        Sounds to me as though the two wires to the o'drive switch are probably cracked where they leave/enter the shifter. In that one position of P they are making contact. -- Dave

          Bingo!

          First of all, when you press the button on the shifter it DISABLES the overdrive and you see the arrow light up on the dash. Shifting to overdrive is enabled by default and the button disables it. When I first encountered this problem, I could still get the light to come on with the shifter in the Park position, probably where the broken wires were getting pressed together. When the lever is pulled back into Drive, the wires get stretched and the broken strands inside disconnect. I've meant to look into it for a couple of years, but it's not really important. The manual says disabling the overdrive is for pulling heavy trailers. It's probably to provide some engine braking going down hill.
