Auxillary Air Valve

I am,so far,the happy and recent owner of a '73 1800ES. Looking for advice on repairs/replacement of the auxillary air valve/slide. This is the device on the right front corner of the head with hoses that connect to the intake manifold.
Mine is frozen and nonfunctional. I have tested it with a heat source. I have a rubber plug in place to block air flow and so far the engine seems to run fairly well. I have looked up replacements and they seem grossly expensive.
Any one had experience with these?
Thanks
nodeloc

Frozen AAV's in these cars are about as common as frozen clocks. ;) You can try freeing it up by soaking in a lubricant overnight or putting it in boiling water. This never worked for me, but some have reported success... Rebuilding is also possible, though from what I've heard fixes are short-lived.

A lot of people simply plug-up the ports and baby the gas a bit off cold starts.

In the next generation of Bosch FI's they switched to electric-powered AVV's. This improved reliability tenfold. These will work in 1800's but you need to re-plum the hoses and run new power leads. The Part ID is: Bosch 0280140100.

I sent 5 non-working AAVs to a shop that cleans parts ultrasonically and 2 of them came back to life.
