'91 745 remove instrument cluster 700

QUESTION: how do I begin to pull the instrument cluster?

I'm stuck at step one staring at the dashboard. There's no trim bezel to look behind & no screw covers to pop off.

There are two likely holes left & right in the plastic; (one on either side of the trimpiece that's snug against the clear lens), holes that look like there might be a spring "latch" release hidden behind but so far all I've done is scratch something in there.

This is a 745 "made in Belgium" (mfg 03/91) wagon (B230F, automatic) if that makes a difference.

It is the 17th Volvo I've owned and done all the repairs and maint. on.... and I am stumped.

I took off all the underneath dash parts already to no avail. It is throwing speedo codes and the check engine light is on & I need to get it smogged. The speedo is acting crazy and the gas gauge doesn't register correctly. I yanked a replacement cluster from a turbo 745 and I'm hoping that I can swap it out and give this wagon back to daughter #5 asap.

    Hello,
there is a small metal latch behind those slots- as per the suggested FAQ site.
once U get the frame off and can get the cluster away from the dash, you will (may) see where the metal clips attach to the dash. These clips keep the bezel or cluster frame in the dash, but some times they protrude too far into the metal clip- I had to file mine back a bit to make it easier to get the cluster out- why? because I had been having the same issues with the speedo in my '91 940.
I had to replace the cluster four times before I found one that worked well enough to keep-the reason is because the capacitors in the digital speedometers are very prone to heat disintegration and fail after several years in service, There is a way to replace these capacitors, as outlined in the FAQ's for the Brickboard site, however I found that it is not an "easy" job. I found a good instrument cluster in a PNP yard a few years back In San Jose, CA.
If you have access to a PnP yard near-by, I think it would be worth-while to take a trip and see if you can find one that will work. Get the entire cluster, as you will have extra bulbs and extra instruments on hand.
