Radio location reversal 200 1981

Hi all,

I've got an 81 245, and somebody has moved the radio from the bottom of the console to the top. I get why, I've got a '73 144 with the radio in the right place, and it sucks to fiddle with while driving. However, having two cars with radios in both spots, I've learned that what sucks worse than the stock mounting location, is having no dashboard speaker because there's a damned head unit in the way. The front door speakers on their own, are like a mouse fart in terms of volume. What do I need to put the radio back to the right spot? I've got a bin in the bottom. I don't know if that's the one from the top location, or if I should fill that void with gauges.. I've already got the tach in the instrument panel, the small clock, and the oil pressure gauge.. I could see filling the hole with volts, vacuum, and... whatever. Regardless, I want to put a dual cone stereo speaker in the dash so that I can hear something above my terrible gearbox bearing whine at highway speed (https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1602338/220/240/260/280/m46_noises.html).. Any suggestions?

Curious about this as well. Keep us posted with what you find.

See what I do for 4.25" speaker install directly to the inner door card (fiberboard or pressboard) on the door.

Hope that helps you with installing or remounting your speakers for better acoustic performance quality.

I've mounted rear speakers in the wagons I've had.

I used the pre-threaded mount points located just under the headliner, above the rear seatbelt posts. These are there so you can mount the Optional rear Luggage/dog cage in the rear cargo space. They are just above the lip.

You need an enclosure, I got ones that hold a 6" round from Crutchfield.

All you need to do is make a small slit in the headliner...1/2- which is hidden by the speaker housing.

Hi have an '81 242DL and have had the original analog and digital/cassette units in both places. However, it's been a few years since I've had any radio in the car. I got tire of their poor reliability and I don't like the looks of after market units. Anyway I went to an mp3 player with AM radio, 20 watt amp, and two good door speakers.

You might look at the original Volvo parts manual that has exploded parts diagrams at http://www.volvotips.com/. See the right side bar about half way down the page under Volvo Parts Books. The compartment at the bottom has groves for mounting the radio so you only need a face plate. There is the wiring harness to deal with also.

Churchfield had mounting and electrical connector hardware for both the upper and lower locations. Are you moving a single DIN unit from the upper to the lower 1 1/2 DIN location?

I had to look up DIN.. yes, it's an alpine head unit, and I'm fully aware I'll probably never get a CD into it again due the the stickshift. I don't care. Do you know if the upper bin can be located? I figured moving the radio down would be the easy part..

Relocating the single DIN unit presently installed in the upper position to the lower is easy . . . a $12 kit.

The upper bin can be replaced with a Volvo piece, that may be a little difficult to find, that the additional gauges you mentioned can be installed in. The additional gauges only appeared in a limited number of cars. The bin is held in place with two screws on the left side and a couple plastic tabs on the right.

Relocated . . . I am not sure what you mean.
