Driver's Door Drama 200 1989

I'm looking at buying a 240 DL automatic.
Driver's door does not unlock from the outside if door is completely closed, but unlocks if door is partially closed. Door handle is okay. Opens okay from the inside. Couldn't find solution on FAQs. Thanks!

Seller said that he lost the door key and had to have a locksmith replace the key. Could that be a factor? thanks

As the hinges wear the door becomes harder to open due to striker alignment to the sagging door. That additional effort required by the handle wears it and the zinc alloy will eventually fail. The stiff wire link from the interior lever to the lock has a bend in it that gets straightened by greater than normal effort to open the lock. That makes the open point for that lever beyond its movement range.

Best to get everything right because failed exterior and interior handles leave you with a permanently closed door. Not sure how you open a door with both handles inoperative.

I think you have to remove the inner door card to access the linkage to undo the door if inside and outside handles fail. A 4 star PITA, plus the potential damage to the card.

          Update 200 1989

I've opened many a different makes and models of doors. Window partially down, rubber doorstop to wedge the window away. Then trial and error with coat hanger. I'll usually open the working door to look at the mechanism to see what I need to do.

Thanks. When the driver's door is completely closed, it does NOT open from the outside, but it does open from the inside.

When the door is almost all the way closed and the door catches the latch partially, i.e. 1" gap between the frame and the edge of the door, the door will open with the handle.

I haven't seen the car in a couple of weeks, but will go back probably this weekend to look at it again (it's an hour drive there).

    Driver's Door Drama 200 1989

I have repaired the door handles hinges with appropriated sized nut and bolt. The original hinge is like a rivet but it wears out and breaks.

I'd be willing to bet that the door handle is not all that OK.

The way these wear out, the fingers that lift the latch rod can not fully work due to excessive wear on a pin or the casting of the handle itself.

Unless you've had the assembly out of the door to look at it, it's hard to judge that it's OK.

The poor man's fix is to steal the good handle out of the rear door. That leaves you with a possibly non functional backup plan. I'd try to pull a rear driver's door handle from a junkyard car or buy one off someone here.

Sooner or later they all wear out.
