Rear suspension bushing replacement 444-544

I should be getting my rear suspension bushing kit from IPD this week. I would like to know if anyone has any tips to do it? Am I going to run into taking anything to a shop to be pressed in or out? I've searched this and other newgroups and cant find anything on the subject for the PV..........

I'm fairly skilled and have done all repairs myself thus far, but I also know when its better to bring in an expert if special tools, hoists are required. My biggest concern is the de-compression of the rear springs. As I see it, I will need to jack up the body and have a jack under the differential to start, then release the differential jack slowly. Can this be done 1 side at a time, or am I going to have to do both at the same time for ease of alignment during reassembly?

And lastly, anyone have comments about the before and after results?

    UPDATE: All went well with the bushing replacement. The mechanic did mention a bit of modification and trimming was required to the bushings as the IPD kit is a wee bit different from the originals, however it only took about 15 additional minutes to correct. No big deal.

    Though the ride hasn't changed, I do feel better knowing that I have refreshed the suspension. Next up, front suspension bushings! WEEEE!

      Dimensionally, the ipd bushings are identical to the originals. Really identical. They're a *very* snug fit, by design, and though they take a bit of persuasion, they shouldn't be trimmed or otherwise modified to fit into place.

      I just did them on my 444 a few weeks ago. No more or less difficult than installing the oem rubber.

      If yours are now absent some material, they may well not last as long as they should. Keep an ear out for bonks snd clunks.

        These are my thoughts exactly. I didn't have to modify anything and the ride was substantially improved with the new bushings and rear suspension rebuild.

    Dakar09, you are exactly correct on the ease of "rebuilding" the 444/544 rear suspension. Paying attention to the few small details is the "toughest?" part of the process. James, you'll find that it is a "piece of cake".

    I did this last year, it's about as easy as you can imagine. Spring decompression is unexciting and uneventful using a jack under the diff. There is A LOT of travel in the suspension, so get the car high off the ground to allow the axle to drop all the way down. If you're limiting straps are still there (doubtful) those need to come off first.

    I didn't have to press anything out or anything in. There should be no need to take anything to a shop for that.

    Keep a floor jack available for use under the control arms to raise or lower as needed for proper re-assembly.

    Lastly, the torque rod setup was a bit of a bear to get back on. Take your time and have patience. Get it on the ground before you tighten those up.

    Also, snug the shock bolts up but don't tighten them all the way until the car is weight-bearing and you bounce it up and down a few times. Then torque them down.

    Results: I went poly bushings all over, new shocks and springs, and new hardware. It handles and rides phenomenally.
