brake fluid leak? 200 1993

All,
strange one - hoping someone else might have experienced or solved it. Been chasing a sporadic leak of something for a couple of months - which car and what part of car. Tracked to the brake line junction in the rear of the 240 just above the drivers side axle near the differential. Every once in a while about a tablespoon of brake fluid leaks out after the car is stopped. I've been adding brake fluid - not knowing where it was going and now I've put it together (duhh). I'll get up close and personal with it this weekend but could it be seaping out of the threads or maybe between the tubing and the nut. Anybody encounter this? And what would be a good approach other than disassembly, clean threads and re-torque it up? The pedal is strangely firm and the brakes seem to work fine so don't know why air is not getting in.

    brake fluid leak? - solved 200 1993

Sorry I didn't get back soon guys... Indeed is is a valve on top of the drivers side axle and the threaded fitting facing the passenger side was seeping brake fluid right from the threads. Managed to get a 1/4 turn on it and it stopped the leaking for now. Thanks for the guidance,
    Robb McC

What you describe as the brake line junction in the rear is actually two separate pressure reducing valves.

Look at the area while applying pressure to the system to see exactly where the leak is occuring. If you don't have an assistant to work the brake pedal you can use a pressure bleeder without fluid.

If a fitting is loose I would just tighten it and see how it goes from there.

Could possibly be a leak in one of the flexible lines between the valve and the solid line that goes to the wheel. Replace both flexible lines if that's the case.

It's rare that the leak will occur in the copper/nickel line itself, but I have seen that happen on my 242.

from your description there are 2 possible places to look closely

    1. the line connection from the front of the car which become a short rubber flex line as it becomes airborne to connect it to the junction fastened to the top of the axle

    2. or the junction on the top of the axle.

if it is #2. you can loosen, clean it up and re tighten or merely retighten to see it that does it

it if it is #1 you are likely looking at replacing that flex line. this can be seriously difficult because you often a have a lot of rust where the rubber line fastens to the all metal line from the front of the car
