1992 244 INTERMITTENT START 200

Hi:
Talked to a guy on CL in Fortville - Indy. 1992 244 5 speed, $1500, 117k. Sitting for 3 years. Was an intermittent start. He replaced plugs, wires, coil, crank sensor, computer?, MAF sensor. As of 3 years ago, daughter would start, drive to work, maybe would start to go home, or not, then start 30" later when dad got there. Never found problem, had fuel and cranked, but intermittent start. He says no spark. Gave up on it but sounds like a fair amount of money/time spent. Don't know if I want to try, assume brakes and clutch may be stuck. Thoughts as to cause?? Do 92;s have the in line 25 amp fuse? Could that be an intermittent corrosion problem? Thanks!

    John,

    This might help:

Yep, that's exactly the philosophy of the fix that 92 needs. Just don't stop looking for it where Rich found it on his 93. Most likely on the 92 it will be at either end of fuse 6 or possibly at the 12-pin connector between cabin and engine harnesses over by the fuel relay. Lousy connection. 15-cent part put on with a $150 crimper. The wire to fuse 6 goes directly from that little black junction box on the fender wall. Peculiar to 91-93 early prod.

What engineers say and what they mean by it:
"Developed after years of intensive research"
      It was discovered by accident.

Man...I'd love to have that car for that price....if it didn't have any (or minimal) rust and the body was in good shape.

That's a long way from North Georgia though although I did ride a Greyhound to Tampa Florida once to pick up a 94 Model 940 that I bought on E-bay.

Best buy that I ever got..Beautiful car with 89K miles...dealer serviced.
    $2100.

It might be as simple as a fuel system relay, Crank sensor, or corroded fuses 4 and 6. There is no 25 amp fuse in a 92.

Good year and stick shift to boot!

He says intermittent no spark. Crank sensor has been replaced. Apparently no problem with fuel delivery, or so he thinks. Just no spark. And, what replaced the 25 amp in line fuse? That would be a place with crank and no spark, right?

Fuel relay has 2 relays in the box, both need to pull in for the engine to start. Common intermittent no start. Replace relay or re-solder circuit board.

If plugs are wet with gas and no spark could be the Ignition amplifier / power stage.

Fuse #6 replaced the 25 amp fuse. Clean, tighten fuse holders, and replace 4 and 6.

OK, I am familiar with the fuel pump relay under glove box. I assumed it only activated the fuel pump. What does the other relay do? (it seems like a small box for 2 relays, esp. since I have used twin relays on German cars and the box is substantially bigger.).Again, the car has intermittent start, sometimes good to go.If I could be sure it would easily cure, I absolutely would buy it. As now, I am talking to the old farmer to get it running if possible, even if someone else gets it. He says NO spark when starting as no spark. Thanks!

The relay activates the ECU and eventually the ICU as well as several engine sensors that are needed to run.

You should feel or hear both relays click separately as you turn the ignition key to start the engine.

Cracks develop at the solder joints between the circuit board and the frame of the relay causing no starts or stalling once the engine is running.

            Dan
