940 No start after timing belt change 900 1993

I've replaced the timing belt on my b230ft. Now the car will not start. It just turns over.

the batter is charged and registers 12.5

I've checked the fuses and looked for loose wires that I may have disturbed. To no avial.

I did move the electric fan for better access to the belt. I've checked it's wires also.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have another person to check spark and such.

Or tell us how you held the crankshaft...

Nice example of a useful thread

940 No start after timing belt change FIXED 900 1993

Well

The problem was the crankshaft timing mark was not aligned. It was way off. I corrected that issue and the car runs perfectly once again.

I didn't worry about the marks on the belt and just put it on so the camshaft, intermediate shaft and Crank all lined up properly. I didn't know having the crank out of position would make such a difference.

Many Thanks to all who helped me follow this path!!

I'm still curious... 900 1993

Yesterday Art asked you for some information:

"...tell us how you held the crankshaft..."

I'd like to know the answer to that too, because you may not have tightened the crankshaft pulley bolt enough:

Stage 1, 44 ft lbs [barely snug]
Stage 2, an additional 60° of bolt tightening [really, really tight]

Can you tell us how you held the crankshaft (stationary) while tightening that bolt?

I would suspect incorrect belt timing, it is real easy to get it off a tooth or two.

You might be able to detach the coil wire at the coil and set it up in a way as to be able to see if it sparks while cranking. ??? Try to locate the wire end 1/2" away from the coil (held in place with pliers or something) and try to turn the key by reaching in through an open driver's side window while looking at the coil wire end... Tough, but I've done this with my 240. Dunno if possible with a 940. An open spark test so there is a fire risk to be aware of.

You could also do the old school fuel check trick of disconnecting the fuel line and putting it in a jar. Crank for a short bit and see if fuel shot into the jar. Very obvious fire risks with this so pretty much a last ditch fuel check effort.

No firing at all? As in rough firing in wrong order?
I'd think most timing belt misalignment issues should have at least a brief rough firing...

Did the rotor get realigned during belt install?

My guess is an electrical disconnect somewhere you just haven't spotted yet.

Good luck.

you likely have:

1. reset the belt in such a way that the crank, cam and rotor are partially not pointing to their respective TDC positions with one another

2. you might have confused the plug wires but that is more likely to cause a crap runner

my advice:

reset the crank to its TDC mark on the outer lower timing cover commensurate with the line on the harmonic balancer. remove the cap and see if the rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire. pull open enough of the upper timing coveer to see if the cam sprocket dot is pointing to its correct dimple on the upper cover inside corner.

my money is on one or both of those 2 are in error.

Thanks Gentleman,

I’m unable to test the spark. The rotor and plugs were not disconnected during timing belt replacement.

I’ll try the fuel test when my wife gets home.

There is no firing at all. Just the timing belt spinning as I turn the key to start.

MrNabisco I think your right, I disturbed an electrical connection. I’m having a hard time finding it so I’m checking all the wires I see.

I can here the fuel pump turning on.

Trichard, I reset the crank on the timing cover and the rotor was pointing at spark plug wire one. Also the crank, cam and rotor are all correct in their orientation.

Not sure where to look.

if the crank pulley is not correctly orientated would this cause a no start?

in a heart beat

i will still wager the problem is something you did when you changed the belt.

for now ignore everything else and retrace all your steps.

If the crank pulley is not correctly orientated would that cause a no start?
