Dear future Friends!
I am new here, let me introduce first. I am living in Hungary I have two ones, a 240 and a 940 wagon. I try to service them myself, I don't have all the knowledge to do it but I try to do my best to be more clever. In some questions hope I also will be on your help too.
Now my first question to you: My 940 (B200F 2000 cm3) computer No is 936. Which No can be interchangeable to this?

Lazlo: see the chart at the bottom of this FAQ file:
https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineFIComputer.htm

It has a list of ECU computers and will help you decide which one to buy.

Dear volhunvo,

Hope you're well. According to the Volvo pocket data booklet - Cars (700,850,900): 1991-1996 (page 28), engine control unit (ECU) 0 280 000 936 (Volvo #3547779) was used only in '92-95 cars, with the B200F engine.

This Volvo publication also shows that ECM 0 280 000 949 (Volvo #6842289) was also used in '92-95 cars, with the B200F engine. This Volvo publication does not set forth what differences, if any, separate the -936 and -949 units.

If you need to replace the ECM (not often required) - and can't get a -936 unit - you might try a -949 unit. It could be that there's no major difference between the two.

Before replacing an ECU, alwyas disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal. Put the negative battery cable clamp in a plastic bag, to isolated it.

If your car's radio is the factory-installed unit, be sure you have the radio security code, before disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery. Cutting power to the car triggers an anti-theft device in the radio.

If you do not have your car's radio security code, contact a Volvo dealer service department, and give them your car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If the radio has been replaced with the same Volvo radio, you'll need a number on the radio itself. If that label is missing, the radio will "go dead" and can't be reactivated. If you have an aftermarket radio, the radio will come back on, when power is restored.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Dear Spook!
Thanks a lot! One more question: Why the negative batt. must be disconnected? If Positive?

Hello,

If I may answer this one Spook..

This is to prevent spark at the disconnected terminal going to the ECU. If you took out the positive terminal spark may occur and this surge travels down to the delicate ECU, damaging it. If you took out the negative usually there's no spark but if there is its already past the ECU so no damage done. When connecting back just connect the negative terminal again. I usually took more precaution by turning on the parking lights before connecting back the negative so that any current surge is absorbed by those lights.

If you're changing the battery (not at this time but in the future), disconnect the negative first then positive next. When connecting back, connect the positive first and negative last.

I learned this during owning an Alfa Romeo last time with much more delicate electronics. Our Volvo is much more hardy but no harm taking these precautions.

Regards,
Amarin.

Dear Amarin,

Hope you're well. Your answer was far better than mine would have been. I'd have replied that the negative cable disconnect simply protects the ECU.

I've been told that when electric (arc) welding is done on the car, the ECU's wiring harness should be disconnected from the ECU.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
