re: 87 245 auto - missing brake valve cap 200 1987

Hi All,

About 1 week ago, I was cruising through the streets of Brooklyn. I was going under 25mph. I saw a guy working under his car supported by a tiny scissor jack on the side of the road. It caught my eye because it was jacked up really high on a slight hill. And of course, there was a car standing right in front of me. I had to slam the brake really hard. I mean really hard. I missed it by 1 foot.

Today, I found a missing brake valve cap and had to retighten the bleeder valve by about 90 degree - 120 degree. I went for a test drive and it looks like it stopped the leak/bleeding.

Is it possible to lose a cap because the pressure build up? I am just wondering... I don't suspect a prank. Thank you as always.

The passenger side is missing.

As you see, this cap is very sturdy.

The human mind is a wonderful thing - perhaps something in your subconscious mind thought that that bleeder felt funny when you tightened up.

Hi All,

Lately, my car didn't smell right when it was running. So I looked around and found that the driver side, top inner valve started to leak. The cap was dangling but it didn't fall out. The fluid leaked very tiny amount but I guess that was the smell. I cleaned with brake cleaner. The valve bolt wasn't loosen like the other side, gave another 10 degree turn. Let's see how this works out.

From the start, maybe I didn't tight enough when I flushed the brake fluid. Or do they back off because constant brake slamming on BQE & LIE?

If it was my car, I'd set aside some time ASAP to remove all bleeder valves, flush and bleed the whole brake system, install all new bleeder valves w new rubber caps. Also of course check the rotors, calipers, and pads, shims & hardware. Winter is coming - would be a very bad time for brake failure on BQE or LIE.

I guess it could happen, I would check the pads to make sure they were not coated with brake fluid.

Looks like its been leaking for a while. Maybe a tiny bit of grit was caught up on the seat when it was previously tightened and that has now turned to dust and disappeared. Your crash stop has just meant that it has been FORCE bled. Clean down, fit new cap on tightened bleeder, but keep on eye on it.

Hi Pageda and Derek UK,

I cleaned up with a can of brake cleaner. The brake fluid leak didn't spread too far to reach any critical components. I don't why I decided to take a look in the first place any way. Bizarre. Anyway, the leak stopped completely. I feel better after driving for two days or about 200 miles.

Thank you as always.
