exhaust size for best fuel economy for turbo. 700 1988

I have messed with my exhust and noticed different fuel economy for my turbo 745 Bosch system.
The best seems to be just cut off under passengers side. I slipped a long cherry bomb over the pipe clamped down and can see my economy drop. It's a 2.5" inlet also. How can I get the best economy? I have heard 3" helps alot. Any idea's?

    Uncle kayakcreek12,

Presuming all is aces with the Bosch LH-Jetronic and EZK ignition ....

You have a 1988 745 Turbo from you post history.

You will want to research the brickboard.com and, perhaps more so, see turbobricks.com. You'll use the search feature for both sights using terms to find thread addressing the same topic as you propose here.

Before we start, you probably have the Bosch 2.2 Jetronic? (No OBD-1 black box with red LED to display ECU errors.) So, with your big blue Volvo Bentley Bible service manual, you do know the 02 sensor is all aces and right as rain? You probably do not have the (the) EGR unless a California or Germany car originally. The engine control system actually works best with all sensors working and the engine wiring harness in excellent shape with all connector corrosion-free and snug and dry and tight. At essence, the engine control system is all aces. How is the engine coolant sensor used by the engine control system and not the engine coolant sensor used for your engine temp gauge? Yes, there exist two engine coolant sensors on your B230 FT engine.

One source of anecdotal evidence would say no:
    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Exhaust.htm#StockorPerformanceExhaust

On a 93 940 T "... Volvo makes a good exhaust system stock. Unless you get into serious performance issues or like noise, stick with stock and save your money..."

Yet, in the next post, we have a 960 exhaust hung on a 760T:

Power increase is...dramatic. Low end takeoff is nicely improved, and it runs through the gears with alacrity. Very modest throttle gives immediate results, in a not unpleasant manner. It is the single best performance thing I have done. This was a remarkably simple power mod that fits and works, and in addition the car is now virtually silent, eerily so, even when flying by. The only issue is that my tow bar doesn't fit, I need the S90/V90 one due to the much larger muffler. And I am eager to see how or if mileage is affected; will report back about that.

The 960/S90/V90 exhaust would be larger as the B6304 engine breathes more atmospheric volume than does the your B230 FT engine. So, you have a larger volume front and rear resonators from a 960/90 series. The FAQ description does not detail the entire exhaust solution they used. Probably a cat-back solution.

If you no longer need to pass MO-state emissions, you could probably perform a header to tail-pipe solution, yet you must preserve a functioning o2 sensor as it is critical to engine control system operation and engine running economy and performance.

You may need to search the archives on brickboard and turbobricks for more information.

Some of the 950 St. Louis City and County municipalities as well as the St. Louis County gendarmes may give you a ticket for loud exhaust. So keep that in mind.

I see you are in teh 'Lou what with the Arch and St. Louis Style Pizza (Cecil Whittakers, Imo's, Faraotto's Joe Boccardi's) and the hot humid and muggy from January 'til December and the mighty Mississloppi river sloughin' all that effluent from up North down to the Mexico Gulf dead zone and the never say die human machination nitrogenous end wastes.

How are the Lacede's Landing and river front cobblestones? Smoother?

How is Radio KDHX FM 88.1 St. Louis independent community all music radio? Still upset about the passing of Scratchy Bob Reuter and his Scratchy Records; broadcast Fridays about this time. "Lay your hands on the radio!" KDHX is the BEST all-music community radios station in North America. Maybe the World. And you have the best, most diverse music scene of any North American city, also.

How is the Speedway Auto Salvage and the Pick and Pull at 7557 Hall St?

St. Paul's Irish Brigade, with Mike Wallace on guitar and bodhrán and Joe on everything else is at John D. McGurks in Soulard in July 2014. Best pint of Guinness you'll have in North America. (They one the St. James Gate Crystal Canes award some years ago.)

I say this as I'll be joining you in the 'Lou soon.

    cheers,

    dud.

That was a lot of good information. Thanks. You should really see what they are doing downtown at the arch. I will post a pic for you soon. I will be in the area tomorrow.
