wagon weird brake problem 700 1988

Hi there - I just got this car, and it was sitting for a year or so. The problem I am having is that the right side front and rear brakes are dragging after I use them a few times. I thought it was only the front, and replaced the caliper. I noticed the pads were glazed but had plenty of pad. The next time I drove it, when I parked, there was smoke coming from the front and rear right side only wheels. The engine strains to reach 45MPH when the brakes are dragging, but when they release, it flies. If I leave it parked for an hour or so, they release fine.

The left side is fine.

I have checked the tubing/hoses, and they appear fine. I am assuming there is no diverter valve, as this car has Anti-Lock brakes. Before I go and replace that entire unit, I was wondering if I am missing something, or if a complete system bleed may help, or if there is something that I can do to the ALB unit itself.

Thank you.

Could be rusty caliper bores and pistons seizing. Try pressing the pistons back a few times. I they free up, you should flush and change the brake fluid.

    Hello,

Old brake hose could form a restriction inside resulting in a one-way valve (even if it looks fine outside). This prevents brake fluid from returning quickly to the reservoir causing dragging brakes. If the rubber hoses are the original ones that comes with the car you may need to replace all.

The fact that after letting the car sit for a while releases the brake points towards the above problem (the brake fluid slowly returns and releases the brake).

    Hope this helps,
    Amarin.

If you crack the bleeders on the left side and the problem goes away, that is a fair indication that pressure is being held in the left side calipers, typical of internally restricted hoses. I don't know if a bum ABS unit would act he same way.
