Rear Brake Noise 900 1993

OK, my 93 945 sat for a few days, not big deal, but we had a big storm come thru with lots of rain and then humidity, again no big deal. Yesterday, fired her up, put it in D, released parking brake. As I eased into the throttle, heard a pop like the brakes were stuck and then a recurring click, click. This noise went faster as the car went faster.

At first I thought a brake pad stuck to the rotor and maybe started to delaminate from the backing piece, but sound persists even when braking. I'm starting to think the parking brake shoe came apart. I know I need to put it on the stands and take apart, but anyone been here before. Parking brake shoes are only 21 years old....may have to write Volvo and complain....

Dear Milanomike,

Hope you're well. I'll bet you find that the brake shoes are down to bare metal.

When replacing parking brake shoes, be advised that:
(a) the slots at the ends of the brake shoes may not be quite deep enough - and/or the brake shoes may be slightly too long - to allow reinstallation of the brake rotor, which encloses the parking brake shoes. You may need to deepen the slots (or to trim the ends of the brake shoes), so keep handy small metal-cutting files. If the rotor does not go on easily, check the new brake shoes against the worn-out brake shoes, as to overall length and slot depth.
(b) the lever mechanism (expander) that forces the brake shoes against the inside of the rotor (when the parking brake lever is lifted) has to be installed precisely. Take a photo before disassembly.

The expander is made of stainless steel, so should be in fine condition.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
