71 142 wiper issue 140-160 1971

First let me say thanks for all your past (and future) advice. I was out delivering Express mails today and the wipers went up, I heard a little pop and they stopped. I thought, oh @#%$, fuse. Pulled over, not the fuse. Checked owner's manual, fuse would also control the washer, that sounds fine. Left car running, wipers on in up position, gave them a push and they go down and up again, stopping in upright position. Is this a sign that motor is going/gone? Or should I explore further? Thanks for any suggestions.
~Andrea

Yes it sounds like the wiper motor is having a problem.

You will probably need to pull the wiper motor to investigate. IIRC, it is easier to remove the entire wiper assembly to access the wiper motor mounting hardware more easily.

Thanks, I will investigate further this weekend. I am guessing I will need to pull the dash?

IIRC, you can pull the wiper assembly without removing the dash.

I will try to remember to take a look at my Volvo repair manuals for the procedure.

Yes you can pull the wiper assembly without pulling the dash.
Hmmm, but thinking about it, you may have to take out the heater core, which is not terribly difficult either.

Pulled the dash today, one of the three "ears" (for lack of a better word) that hold the wiper motor in place was broken off. I had a spare, installed and it works!! I had a replacement dash in better shape than the one that was in the car, so the wiper issue was just the push I needed. Now, dash out, there is a cable (not the speedo) coming out of the back of the instrument cluster that is broken off about 10 inches long, looks like a spring and screws into the back of the cluster right behind the idiot lights. Any idea what this is??

Oops! Nevermind! just took the instrument cluster apart. The cable is from the automatic shift indicator. It must have been disabled when the car was switched to stick.
