Strange electrical problem - help please! 140-160 1973

I'm resurrecting my 1973 142. Haven't started it in a year. All went well except that the rear (only the rear) parking lights and brake lights stay on all the time. They get very marginally brighter when I actually switch them on if that means anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the advice. It turned out to be a combination of a) the brake switch being just activated - I adjusted the brake rod and that fixed it, and b) a slightly dodgy earth at one of the rear lights. All good now.

What happens when you step on the brakes?

I would make sure your rear light assemblies have good clean earths.

"the rear (only the rear) parking lights and brake lights stay on all the time."

Sounds like a short.

Try pulling fuses, one at a time until the lights go out. It would indicate which circuit is being shorted to, and providing the power.

Sounds like your brake light switch might be faulty.

Try removing one of the wires to the brake light switch under the dash.

One of the wires has power all the time, so make sure you don't blow the fuse.
