Alternator aluminum bracket mount to engine block 200 1988

Lower alternator mounting bolt has rusted itself to the alternator and cannot be slid out. So, have removed the two bracket bolts to engine block, but can't see how the bracket is further secured and can't remove bracket thus removing alternator for service.

Question, how many bolts secure aluminum alternator bracket to engine and where the heck are they? Can find no pics in any of three service manuals. Thanx for any info. Only 176K miles on this Brick, think it's the ordinal alternator.

Got the bottom pivot bolt out today, can't believe how corroded it was with the open bottom in the alternator housing. Good news, picked up a re manufactured unit from O'Reilly for a measly 89.99. Figured time is worth something. Not bad for the first replacement alternator. FWIW.

Found the third bolt way down under the aluminum bracket, took it out, removed the assembly from the engine, and now am soaking the bolt/fitting in Kroil over night.

The alternator is a Bosch 80 amp, number ending in 787, with the bottom bolt area wide open to the elements which explains the rust. Got anther from a '91 brick, have to check it out. The old one has bad bearings, might over haul it if the bolt can be pushed out. Thanx.

Whats wrong with the Alt? Not charging? Most likely just the brush pack/voltage regulator which can be removed and replaced with the Alt. still in the car. Put some juice on that bolt and wait it will come out eventually. If thts doesnt work you might need to apply some heat.

Spray PB-Blaster on it and let it soak .... 200 1988

That long bolt (that you wrote was rusted to the alternator) only touches the alternator at two small points -- it's mostly supported by the rubber bushings. So leave the mount bolted onto the engine (for leverage), and spray PB-Blaster on it at those two small contact points, as well as on the nut -- repeat many times over 24 hours, to soak in. You should then be able to free the bolt with wrenches.

Also, the other responder was right -- chances are, you only need to replace the brush/voltage regulator set (Volvo p/n 3523710-6, $65.29), which you can do while the alternator is on the car (and belted), especially if you remove the sheet metal stove around the exhaust manifold (which you ought to remove anyway, as it's a danger to your AMM).
