I See a Red Door and I Want to Paint It White... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S wagon. And so it begins - the massive Virginia facelift is weeks away. We will start with the hood and work our way back. Dad is a former body shop guy so I am in good hands. The door is not red, by the way, but I know you guys like the music references.

Virginia's original color is that sweet white and I want to keep her that way. Where do I get paint that matches the original color but that enjoys all of the modern molecular protections? Any idea how much I will need and what the price on all this might be?

Lastly I think I am going to get some new front bolt-on fenders. I think Joe Lazenby has them - let me know if I am wrong about that.

Cheers,

Pooch

I don't know what kind of spray set-up you have, but I bought a "turbine" type sprayer a couple years ago, since they use a lot less paint than a conventional paint gun,due to very little over-spray,( and I plan on painting at least 4 cars )I figured it will pay for itself in paint savings. So far I've only painted one car, (a Morris Minor) but am very happy with the results. It only took half a gallon. Something to think about.

Hello All:

Many thanks for the advice, and apologies for the delay in replying. I had no idea paint was so expensive these days. We are going to shoot one or two panels at a time so no need to get all of the paint right away.

Not sure what my dad has but I doubt it is that 'turbine' gear. I will find out.

That black coupe is SWEET.

Thanks for the lead on fenders as well.

Cheers,

Pooch

Pooch, that SWEET black coupe ain't a coupe, she's a "family" 4Dr see-dan, and "sporty" 2Dr see-dans ain't a coupe neither.

Thanks for the kind words...

Molecular protections?

Have you seen many 5-10 year old cars' paint these days? You know.. the faded color coat under the peeling clearcoat?

Have you tried polishing the original paint on a ~40 or 50 year old Volvo?

Yeah. I'd say they had it right back then.

Looks gorgeous. :)
Any tips on what kind of polish/products to use? I'd love my faded original paint to look as nice.
Thanks.

The color code should be on the tag in the engine bay. Any body/paint supply place should be able to match it. And, yes, don't be surprised if it ends up quite expensive to buy the 1.5 gallons it'll take to repaint your vehicle.

Pooch, that white can be mixed by any competent auto paint shop. I've had it mixed many times. Auto paint has gotten prohibitively expensive these days, as high as $200-300 a quart depending on what type you want. I found some on-line for $95 a gallon but colors are limited. It's decent paint and comes with hardener and all.
If Lazenby doesn't have fenders try volvo165@msn.com. I know for a fact that he has some.
