Stella's head is cracked 700 1987

Stella's head is toast. She has cracks in three out of four cylinders. Two have cracks in the space between the valves and in the area near the spark one has cracks in both areas .........sigh
So is there a better year than the 87 for 740 turbo heads? Pick-a-part has heads for $50 plus tax and core.
I am still stuck with that bolt in the block, i may turn to professional help, dunno yet.
I am going to have the heads cut off of a couple of head bolts for guides, don't want a hard landing and sure don't want to scuff the head gasket.
Any input is sorely needed and greatly appreciated
So I am going to focus on the problem(s) with the 92 240 for now, maybe that will take me to a happy place
I have next week off nice to know won't be bored.

Well you've had non-professional help that busted an "easy out" in the bolt, so it's time for some skill. You have about one chance left to save the block, and you'll need a great welder with a wire feed machine. I'd heat the block around the busted bolt to a dull red and allow to slow cool. Then a good welder can form a tower on the busted bolt and then weld a large nut to it. Once cool the nut can be used to start the busted bolt out of the block. If it snaps off, then weld on another. Eventually it should wind out of the block.
What you don't need is a ham-fist with a wire feeder messing things up further. Find someone who has done this before.
After thats successful then look for another head.
And after all that the rings in the pistons may have lost so much tension, and the pistons collapsed, that the engine is cooked and past well done.

I've spent three hours in two days searching for someone who will come and do some welding voodoo on Stella's head, but no one is even vaguely interested.
So i'm going to shelve this project till either I can afford to have it lasered out or decide to call it quits and scrap the car.
I have a 92,240 that is fixable next in line.
I'll let you know when i decide.

Don't you have a neighbor with a welder ? They don't have to be nuke certified to weld a nut onto a broken bolt. It may take a couple tries, but it not rocket science. I can do it with my haphazard welding ability. What have you got to lose ?

Greg

nobody in the neighborhood, does any of that, and remember there is an extractor stuck in the remnants of the bolt and is it slightly below (like maybe an 1/8 of an inch)the top of the bolt hole.
I'll have about $300 going into the 92 (as long as the head is serviceable) with a top end gasket kit, timing belt, water pump front crank, and intermediate seals, and perhaps an oil pan gasket. I know it needs some of the regular front end work, ball joints, tie rod ends and cone bushings, and struts(which i have).
This about what the laser, and towing fees are going to be w/o the gaskets, head bolts etc.and I don't currently have enough to do both.
I'm going to the pick a part twofer sale saturday, and I 'll see what comes home with me. Looks like i'm packing a lunch.

Why not visit a "Pickandpull" and get a rebuildable head ?

I have a head bolt broken off in the block
Then an extractor broken off in the bolt.
not a bolt broken off in the head.

Afaik, any 530 head is the same. I'd get an NA head, which would have been subject to less heat etc, and put the T exh valves in it; they are the only difference.

Head bolt, some use a welder to put an extender/other bolt/etc onto the piece in the block, and use that to twist it out.
