any tips on how to spot a good or bay upholstery shop? 120-130

Hello All,

I am preparing for the next steps in refurbishing the 120. I went to my local upholstery/fabric shop and they gave me a great rate for grade A leather. I as aiming to buy textured vinyl @ $10 a yard, but the $350 for a whole cow skin- I just couldn't pass up. So now I am hunting for an upholstery shop that can do the handy work. Looking at the cost of interior bits from VP makes me think I am going save some money and get a quality improvement along with durability over the original interior. I just don't want to take it to the wrong shop.

Thanks in advance,

By all means ask to look at some cars they have finished. Most shops will be glad to show you some of their work. I've learned to do my own upholstery, (out of necessity) but I'm too slow at it to make any money to do it for anyone else. The $10 per yd. vinyl sounds cheap, about half what I pay for mine, but the $350 per hide seems awfully high, since I can get hides for $100 to $150 here in Texas. And you'll probably need at least 2 hides to allow for waste. Good luck.

Pick a shop and ask to see samples of their work, or ask around and get someone to recommend a shop. Word of mouth usually works best when looking for a quality shop.

Maybe check with local hot rod clubs/individuals. Guys that build cars from the 30's and 40's always need upholstery and they'll be most picky. -- Dave

How about the Chinese lady that does the Interiors for Gas Monkey Garage on Fast n' Loud?

I'll bet Gas Monkey keeps her busy and frustrated enough..
That being said, references from the car clubs are a great source. And, this'll take more time and money than you're planning on, I'm almost positive.
