Where to buy refilliable wiper blades? Walk-in stores, preferred, please.

Dear Volvo Folks,

So, like the wiper squeegee blades on the Bosch wiper blade assemblies failed on the dear 1992 240 GL. It was a rapid decline of these emeritus Bosch wiper blades, as they do, when they come to their end.

I mean the actual wiper blade edges, not the assembly that secure to the wiper arm. The squeegee wiper blade edge part.

A short, yet aggravating trip, to several stores (Autozone, Carquest, and another) reveals one can now only purchase, for Bosch wiper blade assemblies, replacement assemblies. Not merely the squeegee edge refills.

The Autozone sale representative made mention of purchasing the refillable squeegee online from RockAuto.com and the like. Wiper blade failure is, usually, a rather extemporaneousness event, and under circumstances rife with precipitation. WAL*MART, I'm told, only sells the wiper blade assemblies. Target is useless, of course. Please don't mention visiting the stealership.

I purchased a set of the Carquest Trico brand, made by Bosch for Carquest. These Trico blade assemblies use ABS plastic hinge points, versus all-metal hinge points on the Bosch wipers.

So you folks know a store to walk into and buy these refillable wiper squeegee edge blades? (I dunno what to name these.)

Or should we stock up and purchase several pairs at a time from RockAuto.com.

I prefer not to use credit cards for everything as seems the continuing trend. I like the walk-in brick and mortar store, look, choose, and maybe then purchase, with cash.

Thanks.

Grumpy Technical Writer.

Back in the day, I always used to replace just the rubber inserts. Most manufacturers had them, especially big names like Trico. However, over the years wiper designs became more and more diverse, so different styles of inserts would have been required and replacement would not even have been possible with some types. Also, the blade designs became "throw-away", where the parts were made to last no longer than the rubber itself. Basically, today you're SOL. Being a packrat, I have a pile of discarded blades in my garage so I can usually find some kind of temporary replacement whenever a blade dies on one of the vehicles in the household. I encourage everyone to save their "retired" blades.

A few years ago, when the Bosch refills seemed to suddenly disappear, I asked about it, in a chain auto parts store. The explanation was not certain, but he thought the display was changed to devote store square footage to higher value product. More $$ per square foot.

They sold refills for about half the price of a complete arm so it is very likely more profit per sale and the consumer is screwed again!

But we are not supposed to notice that are we?

I have found 6mm or 7mm (I'm pretty sure they're 7mm) wiper refills in-store at both Pep Boys and Advance Auto. They won't be Bosch brand but Trico or one of the those brands. Rather than carry them in different lengths, Advance Auto carries them in one long length. The metal stiffener strips are scored at 1 inch increments so that you can snap them off at the correct length and cut the rubber squeegy to match. The remnants work on the headlight wipers if your car has those.

                    Uncle Chris Mullet,

Thank you. I'll try teh Pep Boys and Advanced Auto.

                    cheers,

What is in store for you

I stopped in our Advance this morning while in town for errands. They carry Trico brand "custom cut to fit" fillers in 6,7, and 8mm widths. Not sure what they fit, but these packs of two 22" refills are listed for 6.99. Most of the wiper arms I see of that brand are, yikes, $15 and up.

I want to say I found the 7mm, to be the best fit, but it's been a while since the last purchase. The ears on the Bosch frames are flexible enough to " spread to insert - squeeze together once in place", providing some degree of tolerance for variation in refill width.

Whenever I install refills I have visions of them slipping out while in use and the frames scoring big arcs across the windshield. It's just me I guess.

No, not just you. Me too. Happened. Unfortunately the family member operating the vehicle was not aware the arm could be lifted off of the windshield (it was the passenger side). Drove 20 miles like that.

We have since replaced the windshield, but the root cause, I'm certain, was my fault in not getting the arm properly locked into the wiper blade. Not quite the same as a refill gone wrong, but same result.

What is in store for you, are wiper refills at Federated auto part stores!!!!!!!

                            Uncle Art!

Found refills hanging at a local Federated auto parts store nearby.

Not exact fits like Bosch wiper blades into Bosch wiper blade holder assemblies, or hhhwhutever you calls them. You get the narrow strip wiper blade refills, and you have to crimp the wiper arm holder at the tines (for lack of a better word) to secure the wiper blade refill into the wiper assembly.

Federated is another auto parts store chain or franchise type of chain, I guess.

                            http://www.federatedautoparts.com/ to find a store.

I posted this a month ago and forgot.

                            Hope that helps.
