Belt Adjustment Bolt / Nut Source ?? 900

Hi all. 1994 940 but I think my question applies to all 40 series. While adjusting my belts I overtightened the short middle bolt/nut and it snapped. I am not talking about long bolt you turn to adjust tension. Rather the short ~ 1" bolt/nut long bolt screws thru. Its head is threaded. I can not seem to find a source to get replacement except Volvo dealer($$!!). Checked IPD & FCP. They have long adjusting bolt but not part I need. Please if anyone know where I can find let me know. Thanks.

    Hello, from Memphis, TN.

Please do like Blindboy said in previous post to your thread, (post a picture of exact part you need). I am confident I can get your tensioner bolts and send them to you in Alabama.

Those bolts are expensive from Volvo and not too sturdy.

I always loosen everything up and tension the belt with a pry bar - not TOO tight.

Then I snug up the tensioner and tighten the other mounting bolts, holding tension all the time.

Two of out used 740s didn't even have the tension bolts when we bought them - I think they get broken when people try to use them when one of the mounting bolts are still too tight.

Only source I found was Volvo dealer. Nearly $30 !! So I just used crow bar to adjust tension and a regular nut & bolt instead of this special one. Works fine and am sure it will stay fine. Funny that no independent company makes this part as it is common to many cars not just Volvo.

    Dear Hoola,

Hope you're well. I'm pretty sure that belt tensioners - a unit that includes the arm, the short bolt (which goes through the arm), and the long (tensioning) bolt (which goes through the head of the short bolt) - are "dealer-only" parts.

A salvage yard should have these tensioners, as they were used on 940s and 740s (and possibly 240s). You will need to specify which tensioner you need: alternator, power steering, or air conditioning compressor, as well as the year and model.

The long (tensioning) bolt can be bought at any hardware store, that stocks metric fasteners. I believe it is M6 x 90 mm long (3.5"), so it is best to buy a 100mm (4") bolt and cut-off 10mm (3/8").

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Pretty sure you have to buy the whole assembly, or junkyard search. Pretty common part.
