antenna motor runs for insufficient time to retract antenna

Hi guys and ladies,

1997 Volvo S90 antenna motor runs for insufficient time to retract the antenna. The teeth are engaged and the up cycle runs long enough to raise a fully retracted antenna but mine is already almost fully up. I discovered this while replacing the mast which was not the problem as the old one was not broken in any way. The motor did run by itself (no one switched the ignition or radio on or off) while I had the cover off the motor looking for gunk as the 900 FAQ suggested. Could I have shorted something out with a tool I had in my hand? Have read all the FAQ and searched all RWD posts to no avail. Do these motors go bad in this way? Any ideas for a solution. The new motors are awfully expensive.

Thanks a bunch,
Len

The problem is the mast is not free enough to go all the way down. It may also be bent and jamming. Try some PB Blaster or oil to get it working smoothly again. Or it may be time for a new one.

Thanks for the reply Pageda. It turned out to be the motor which stopped working altogether. I replaced the motor and now the antenna goes up and down but goes down too far-about 2 inches below the chrome bezel on the fender. The antenna works so I have time to ponder the problem.

There is supposed to be a sleeve at the bottom of the antenna mast, is that there?

Is there also a "knob " at the top of the antenna?

          Dan,

Thanks for taking an interest. The problem of the antenna going down to far was solved by taking the mast off the motor and inserting a piece of hose that was equal in length to the distance that the antenna was going below the surface. I put this into the lower end of the mast. Now the antenna on its way down hits this hose with a smaller diameter and stops the antenna from retracting into the motor housing. That leaves the ball end just where it should be.

There must be something inside of these (working) antenna masts that does what my hose does and something must have happened to mine. This is a used car that I have had for about 5 years and the antenna has always worked but who knows what happened in the 13 years prior to that (this is a 1997 S90).

In the process of finding the solution I did in fact forget to put the metal piece you refer to on and in later attempt I put it on the mast before inserting the the antenna so your contribution was indeed helpful. I finally got everything right and it works. It is now just a matter of waiting to see how long my fix lasts.

          Thanks again,

          Len

I am not sure why yours goes down so low, maybe a few inch piece of the plastic tail broke off at some point?
