Cheapest Starla exhaust kit? 900 1995

Morning
95 940 NA, rear muffler literally fell off on the way home. Best I can find for an exhaust kit including hangers and mounting stuff is $164 including free shipping. http://www.europortparts.com/searchitem.epc?lookfor=247%2053002%20367&s_temp_transfer_key=_4090GL7UG

Anyone here have better(cheaper) option for kit(including mounting hardware)?

Get OEM Rear Bracket. for the Starla Kit.. 900 1995

Realize this is an old thread, but wanted to weigh in, just in case other read it.

    I have a 1995 945 (now custom badged as a "V940") with a Starla.
The Starla exhaust setup is fine, but the rear muffler hanger is junk. If you've got a skinny band of 20-gauge steel that wraps around the muffler, it *will* break and your muffler will drop. get the OEM hanger to supplement the starla kit.

The OEM hanger is a two-part heavy-duty rod setup that "cradles" the rear muffler and locks it between the two parts of the OEM hanger. It doesn't snap like the thin band steel on the stock starla setup. Order the two pieces from Tasca Volvo and it holds the starla exhaust just fine. Think of it as the "upgrade" on the Starla kit.

I have installed 3 Volvo kits. They are great.

I usually cut the old system into 3 pieces - once about a foot from the cat pipe and once as near as I can before the pipe goes over the axle. The foot from the cat pipe allows some leverage to get the pipe out.

I use an exhaust pipe cutter which has 4 cutting wheels and a screwdriver handle - you only have to swing it just over 90 degrees to quickly cut the pipes.

I lay all the pieces on the ground and check them. I mark each pipe that goes inside with a magic marker ring at 1 inch from the end and at 2 inches from the end - this allows me to judge if each piece is inserted the same amount and if it is inserted enough to hold.

I use an old scissors jack to help hold the muffler up during assembly.

After everything is in place and loosely fastened - (be sure to use Volvo's really great spiral clamps) - I adjust things so that all is in alignment - most parts have vertical or horizontal portions. Make sure the pipe that goes over the axle is vertical and has the same clearance front and back.

Look the system over from a distance, both on the side and from the rear.

I lift the system SLIGHTLY to take sag out and tighten everything up.

    Easy peasy

      Hi James,

Whatever system you get, I suggest having the connections welded instead of clamped.

Leak tight and secure. Good luck sir.

I prefer the use of clamps over welding as once it's welded a DIY repair or replacement of one part becomes more difficult.

Agreed. Welding takes a DIY project and turns it into shop time. Thanks for all the responses. Found the old post I was thinking of: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1500681/940/960/980/V90/S90/okyou_convinced_now_buy_oem_cat_back.html
Based on this and speaking with a few peeps I am convinced the Volvo kit is a glorified Starla. So I will shop for the lowest price "Starla exhaust kit".

I don't know if this is completely true these days -- when I worked at an Indy Volvo shop we installed only Volvo parts. The mufflers were made with the inlet and outlet pipes welded to the body of the mufflers rather than the aftermarket products with "folded" seams. That could be a way of ID'ing who actually made the parts. -- Dave

I agree with Dan and James. Clamp it and that gives you the option to replace just one part of the exhaust.

I also recommend exhaust joint compound at all junctions. Ensures a good air-tight fit without over-clamping. Makes for easier service when a part needs to be removed in the future.

            Dear jwalker,

Hope you're well. I concur as to use of clamps, in case a component fails prematurely or suffers road hazard damage.

Separation may also be eased, by coating the ends of the pipes with a high-temperature (>2,000⁰F) anti-seize compound. Such anti-seize compounds usually are nickel-based. These are not cheap. However, nickel-based anti-seize compounds are less likely to deteriorate, than are copper-based anti-seize materials, especially when used near the catalytic converter.

            Hope this helps.

            Yours faithfully,

            Spook

Volvo kit usually comes with an over axle pipe, I have read these are hard to install so they are not banging into the axle or the body.

      Dear pageda,

Hope you're well. When installing a cat-back kit, it is best to leave the clamps a tad loose, until all pieces have been aligned. The clamps can then be tightened, gradually, until everything is fully-snugged.

Admittedly, it is hard to see - when one is directly under the pipe system - that the cross-axle pipe is not tilted, i.e., towards the driver's side or towards the passenger's side of the car. A roofing square can be used to ensure that the cross-axle pipe does not "lean". If the cross-axle pipe is straight "up", it will not contact the bodywork.

If the rubber hangers (shackles, in Volvo-speak) are in good condition, they should hold the resonator and the muffler in the correct position. If that is so, the cross-axle pipe should not touch the axle.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

That is interesting, I happen to have an over axle pipe a buddy of mine gave me after a generic muffler shop wouldn't use it and bent their own under axle pipe. I may now try it based on your post.
        Thanks

    Dear The Rod,

Hope you're well. With exhaust kits, cheaper is not better, unless you plan soon to sell the car. If you plan to keep the car, get a "long life" Volvo replacement kit from www.tasca.com .

If, however, money is truly tight, the Starla kit seems to be a reasonable value.

If the factory-original rubber hangers (shackles) are in good condition, re-use them. Volvo seems to have relied on top-notch rubber suppliers. Rubber's quality cannot much be assessed by looking at the unit. Much depends on what ingredients were used and how the rubber was processed. There's no point spending hard-earned money on exhaust parts, only to have them fall-off because of failure of poor-quality rubber hangers.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Hi Spook
I thought I had seen a Lucid post sometime ago where he stated that the Tasca kit was now a Starla as well? Sorry working remotely and hands full. I would pay 40 or 50 more for a higher quality, can you confirm the maker of the Tasca kit?

        Dear the rod,

Hope you're well. Tasca is a Volvo dealer. I doubt they'd sell any parts for Volvos, that aren't Volvo brand.

Starla could make the kits, that bear the Volvo name. If so, the kits will be made to Volvo's specification.

Some brand-name products sold at Wal-Mart are made specifically for Wal-Mart. Because Wal-Mart always wants to have the lowest price, those brand-name products may not be identical in all respects, to products sold elsewhere.

The Volvo "long life" cat-back kit is Part #272259 (formerly #272260). MSRP is about $227.00. Ask the folks at www.tascavolvo.com at what price they'll sell the
        "long life" cat-back kit.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

          Hi Spook,
The last couple times I have tried to buy something from Tasca Volvo (940 parts), I never got a reply from my inquiry. I wonder if they still want to sell the old parts?
I have been using Jim Ellis Volvo for parts lately. They usually have to order the parts but they have some of the best prices for real Volvo parts and they often give a discount on follow-up parts:

I had my mechanic cut off the middle resonator, because I got tired of replacing it. He just welded a straight pipe from the cat to the rear muffler, which I got from NAPA for @50 bucks. I can't tell a difference in the sound at all. He charged me 70 bucks to do this. I have at least eliminated one expensive part of the exhaust system this way.
