speedo bouncing after new cable install 200 1983

'83 244 speedo was bouncing at 60 mph and higher, My odometer was intermittent and both worked great at lower speeds. Figured the cable was going bad, so I replaced it.
About a 1000 miles later it is doing the same thing, I don't think it is the cable. I've read that there is a gear in the transmission the cable goes into.
How do I get to the gear to inspect/replace it? Is it possible that my speedometer cluster is going bad?
Thanks

speedo bouncing after new cable install 200 1983

Hi, i read in past posts not to grease the cable, so i have not. I willing to try anything. I looked at the odometer gear when this first started and looked ok. I will be rechecking it.
    Thanks

Before you crawl under the car again maybe you should check the other end of the cable at the speedometer. Your symptom could indicate a loose connection at that point.

In your previous post of December you said you have seen Art's photos. Even though that's an auto trans the apparatus is much the same, as you know.

Check and make sure that hasn't come loose.

And if not, well, you are right where you need to be. Remove the screw, unscrew the cable collar, pull it out and remove the lock plate if it doesn't come off with the rest.

Then pull out the driven gear by the stem. I believe you used a new O-ring when you did the replacement, didn't you? It may offer some resistance, but just pull it out straight and it will yield.

If the gear is damaged it will be obvious.
