replaced blower motor 700 1992

Replaced the blower motor in my 92 749 turbo wagon w/ a part from pep boys.
seemed to go in w/ no modifications. Did not remove or uncouple the computer, just unscrewed and slid it out of the way. Blower seems to work fine. Drove the car and it overheated severely. Is this just a coincidental thing or could I have done something in the course of the work to cause the overheating?

What does 'overheated severely' mean exactly? Needle pegged? steam from tank? leaks anywhere?
It seems odd, as there is no coolant passage near the fan.
