240 and 740 blowermotor and heater core jobs for DIYers 200

hi sages- just read that the 700 series volvos have much easier r and r jobs on blower and core than the 240 series. have heard many times that this job is hellacious on the 240 which i am fearing on my 92 245 eventually.for those with front line experience on the 740 is this job much simpler on the 740 and if so how. from what i have read and experienced in the last 10 years, the 240 which ended in 93 is just about the last car which is relatively easy for a DIYer to work on(except for the blower and core). up until then i thought the trophy for ease of maintenance went to the slant six aspens and volares from chrysler which ended in 80. things are really getting tough. always concerned in the back of my mind that my 245 will be stolen (less likely b/c it has 3 pedals on the floor) or totalled by an inattentive phone texter in a passat or audi. as oliver hardy used to say , looks like another fine messs. when that day comes to fix the core or blower in the 245, i may plug off the heater juice and venture up to art in stinking creek,md. he will be surprised to see me. no matter, will treat him to a steak and shaeffer and some key lime pie. your sage advice always appreciated, oldduke

In the 740, they added the blower motor to the bottom of the dash - in the 240, they built the car around the blower motor.

740 940 blower motor easy as 15 minutes and its out. took my 940 out to clean the leaves out.
240 blower motor a lot harder take off the sides of the unit, pull the fan clip and unscrew the motor and slide it out. you dont have to take the whole unit out unless you are doing the heater core and that is a job that you wont enjoy, at the same time you wont want to fork out the dollars to pay for it to be done so you will get some satisfaction by saving some money.

Blower motor, pull knee and side kick panel, glove box, computer mount. Couple screws drops right out. Just did this Thursday. Took about 15-20 minutes. The core is ALOT MORE. looked like a grenade went off.

thanks aleekat, but timeout on the 47th yard line- are you saying thats all you have to do to remove the blower motor in the 740, not the 240 which i understand from brickbusters here is hell on the rocks. wow 740 would only be 15 minutes to out the blower. figure 240 might be 15 hours. not surprised that core is a grenade hit job in either 240 or 740. did a few cores in fords and dodges which was a lot of tedious work. only easy core i did was in a recirculating air heater in a 56 ford mainline sedan. bet no folks here heard of a heater like that. thanks tons oldduke

hi joe kidd- that is news to me. used those radiator stop leak products back in the 60s. they either plugged up the heater core causing very little heat or blew out and the leak continued. guess they have been improved since the war.thanks tons oldduke. remember one product was called bars leak. will try this new stuff when i need it.
