How much do you have wrapped up in spares for your Volvos? 200

OK sportsfans, here's a scary question; how much money do you have invested in spares for your Volvo sitting on the shelf? Guesses to the nearest 100 dollar increments will do. Me, probably about $4,000.00, which is pretty scary for a fleet of cars that might be worth $3,500.00...

I don't really measure it by money. I measure by the cubic foot.

....So how many cubic feet are in a one car garage?

The problem is I lived in the rust belt for years and years. Stripped waaayyyyy too many rusted out RWD Volvos to count.

I cant really make a guess at my "back stock" but when Rusty, the owner of RPR Volvo parts in El Cerrito closed down about a year or so ago, I stocked up quite a bit on his "closeout" prices.

For instance I got a new 'Made in Germany' water pump for $20; timing belt for $5; a case of Mann oil filters at $2.50 each, new power steering pump for $20, brake pads at ridiculously low prices, and the list goes on. Wish I had bought more. I also stock up on my particular brand of motor oil when there's a good sale. Only reason I did't/don't stock up more is the lack of storage space.

I had about 3 good sized RubberMaid bins full of parts for my '86 & '92 240's until I went to the XC70 side. Gave everything to my son-in-law for his '91 245.
Had at least $250+ of this and that. Now I'm starting up a new bin for my '04 XC70. It's slow pickins' in the yards right now for the newer model, but there I'll get there soon.

I have so many spare used parts that I'm having to make a special storage area in the attic of the garage. My old storage area that I carved out under my parents laundry room by cutting a hole in the wall and reframing with doors is now being lost to a sale of that home.

On the shelf I have a couple hundred in new parts. Things like front seals, belts, gaskets, in-tank fuel pump, ect... are things you just kind of have to have on hand or your a day or two away from getting them local at a higher price than the web.

If I could I'd have everything that I might need sitting and waiting plus of coarse the essentials in a tool box always with the car.

I have a 960 and a 240 so my answer has been stated by the following:

    Art's first sentence:
I'd really prefer to remain blissfully ignorant on this number.

    Dan's last sentence:
Most of which I will probably never need.

I often find when I pick up a spare part it often guarantees that that part will never breakdown.

Do you mean besides the parts cars ? What about parts for cars that are no longer on the road ( AMM for and '84 245 anyone ?)?

    I'll guess $2-3k all in.

$650 in PNP receipts in just last year alone - including having a rebuilt PNP alternator on the shelf all ready to go.

The encouraging part of the process was that the local electrical rebuilder at the time stated that even the brand new name brand alternators coming out of China were complete junk and that running and continually rebuilding an older Bosch, Denso etc. was the way to go. As witness to his boxes and boxes of brand new name brand alternators that had been sent to him for rebuilds, I could see his point.

Next step on the learning curve is to see whether Bosch has indeed discontinued 240 fuel injectors and whether having rebuilt fuel injectors on the shelf and ready to go is an option. I do not know how long rebuilt injectors will keep on the shelf. Via some research, I see that in WitchHunter Performance in Washington State appears to be a well thought of injector cleaner/rebuilder. I also see that Injector Labs in Nevada is a possible rebuilder for Bosch specific air mass meters. FCP Groton apparently resells their specific rebuilt units.

Having owned 6 240 and 1 940 over the past 20 years. I can safely say that I have at least 5K in spare parts in the garage and shed. Now down to 2 Volvos anyone need anything.

I have no idea, a few hundred in new consumables and a garage full of junk yard finds. Most of which I will probably never need.

Do you have to get so private and personal?

To newmexico240; I didn't mean to get so private and personal, I'm sorry if you took offense to the topic. I was just looking around my shop and saying to myself, "holy cow, I could be using that money on other things". I was just wondering about other anonymous folks here on the 'board.

I'd really prefer to remain blissfully ignorant on this number. What shocks me occasionally is how the value of some parts purchased 10 years ago has appreciated, when it comes time to restock an item. And our Volvos are worth what it would cost someone else to replace them in exactly the same condition, without me lifting a finger - a number quite unrelated to anything an insurance company might consider.

But for those of you who are in this for the economics alone, it is a good question to ask yourselves.
