cold starting problems 700 1989

My 1989 740 GLE 16v is hard to start when cold. It stalls, and idles rough until it warms up. Then it runs fine. Any suggestions?

Read the FAQ - read the codes - read the FAQ based on the codes.

If you have multiple codes, or if the resulta are not clear -

See a dealer - they have decision trees to solve multiple codes.

Don't throw parts at it unless you have access to free parts.

How are you on stage I?

Quick test is squirt in some ether (quickstart) from cold and engine should fire up straight off...this indicates that lack of fuel is the prob so its a temp-related issue or the ECU as a prob...if it does not start with the ether then its an electrical issue (check plugs points esp rotor arm, as everyone forgets them) If it does start from cold with the ether then its not getting fuel because of too low a resistance from the sensor or that the ECU is ignoring the info.

I almost forgot... my check engine is on. I haven't been able to get to a dealer to have it looked at. My mech and the local auto parts store computers won't work on anything that old. Any ideas?

Read and absorb this section in the 700/900 FAQ. It will tell you how to extract the error codes - no special tools or code readers needed:

      http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm

BTW, you have the Bosch engine management system, not Regina.

Get back here with what you found reading the codes.
