242GT Fog Light Bulb ? 200

Does anybody know offhand what type of bulb is required for the grill mounted fog lights on a 1980 242GT ? Thanks in advance for the help.

Mike

Been a while since I owned a 242GT, but I think they are H3s, 55 watt. Same bulb as the Bosch 7" rectangular fogs which mount under the bumper.

Thanks, guys. I have both in parts drawer in the garage, so I'll know for sure when I open the light this weekend to replace the bulb.

242GT Fog Light Bulb ? 200

When I was posting, I was trying to remember if it was H1 or H3, so I'm glad someone else chimed in. It's been a while for me as well. I seem to remember there being some disparity between the US fog lights and the European lights. A lot folks swapped the US for the Euro lights. The housings were the same basic size and shape but the US and Euro, I believe, used different bulbs since one wasn't legal for the US at the time. This was the era when the United States was against people changing bulbs independently of housings and could best be described as a "transitional" period in vehicle lighting.

I think one uses H1 and one uses H3. The bulbs themselves don't look anything alike...one has a blade coming off of the bulb and the other has a wire lead. My memory is equally foggy. There was debate over "Driving" vs "Fog" and a lot of swapping was done. Words such as "Selective yellow" come popping into my mind. The debates were impassioned. Oh, memories...

Volvo didn't put either one in the manuals. Once you get in there, it will be obvious which one it is. I'm 100% sure it's one of those two. Solve the mystery and update us!

Thanks again, guys for the help and guidance. The lights take an H3 -- with the wire lead. Interestingly, Hella makes some really neat yellow coated bulbs that provide the nice yellow beam even though the lights have clear lenses.
