240 Low beams not working 200

Hi,

Both low beam head lights on my '90 240 have stopped working. High beams are fine. Bulbs are OK. Anyone have a problem like this and con point me in a direction?

Thanks,
Mark

If it isn't the bulbs, it could be a relay(s) or the dimmer switch which is part of the turn signal stalk.

1. Relays - It is most likely the step relay which is a silver cannister attached to the fender well behind the battery. Pull it off, look for corrosion, clean all corrosion. That alone might fix your problem. That is a common problem. Less likely, but still possible is the main headlight relay. I believe it is located under the dash but I'm not sure where.

2. Dimmer switch. Remove the top steering wheel cover to give you access to the stalk/switch. First make sure the switch is mounted securely and all wires are okay. They can come loose. Before reattaching everything, try spraying the switch and wires with electrical spray cleaner (CRC). I had a similar problem with my 90 244DL. Tightening and spraying cured my headlight issue.

Good luck!

Check the headlight-relay plug connection under the driver's side dash near where your left foot would rest. The connection can overheat and melt the plug. If that looks ok check the plug connections on the low/high beam switch under the hood on the fender behind the battery. Pull the plugs off and reconnect.

How do you know the bulbs are ok?
Both of our low beams went out with in a week
of each other a couple of months ago. Swapped
out the bulbs with new and all was fine afterwards.

Good luck,
Joseph
