M46 OD Gasket Leaking 200 1983

My transmission has a leak at the gasket where the OD unit meets main body of transmission.

Does anyone have advice for how I can fix this? How difficult is it to remove the OD portion of the transmission without removing the whole transmission? Any tips?

Thank you

So, from your description, the leak would be more accurately described as being between the gearbox and the intermediate housing.

The OD unit is definitely removable without removing the entire transmission. I think the intermediate housing is also removable just by itself. Wait to hear from someone else on that, though.

I don't know if the gasket is available but you could easily make one.

Before doing anything you need to release the overdrive. But rather than launch into explanations let me ask, have you tried just tightening the fasteners in the area of the leak?

Also, am I correct in assuming you don't really live in Autaugaville, AL?

I found just the gasket online somewhere. Make sure its a higher quality green gasket. IPDUSA.com has a kit that includes the gasket I believe. You'll need a 10 or 11 mm wrench cut in half so it can fit up top for the small bolts. Need to drain the Transmission too. Type F trans fluid when refilling. I like the filler you screw onto a quart. Usually can't get all the fluid out of a bottle so you just need to empty it into the next one once its half full.

The archives have all you really need if you search.

Kill car in reverse so the OD will come off. Keep it in reverse too through out the procedure.

Remove front half of drive shaft to make room. You will need some self locking nuts for the driveshaft when your done. I hate dealing with the driveshaft. Mark the two halfs with paint or white out.

You might as well rebuild the OD with new seals and gaskets. To remove the solenoid you'll need a wrench modified by grinding it thin enough. Look in archives for info.

It took me a good deal of time the first time around. My gasket was leaking from a tear and so when I was replacing my clutch less than a year later I replaced the gasket. Second time was a breeze.
