ODB codes 231 and 221 900

Hi,

I have a 1994 940 with bosch ignition system, that has codes 221 and 231, in socket 2. Replaced o2 sensor with a used one that was picked earlier and codes came back immediately. I am now thinking of testing the O2 sensor. If I understand the process correctly, the engine should be at normal temp and placing one lead of the meter to ground and the other to the black wire on O2 sensor, the voltage should move around from .2 to .9 volts. Is this correct and does anybody have any pointers?

Car runs fine, but the exhausts stinks and not of gasoline.

Thanks

Gus

With that combination of codes (2-3-1 and 2-2-1), I would check the air mass meter before going at the lambda sensors. They're probably doing their job and are less likely to go out.

Mine threw that combination a while back along with the exact symptoms as you describe. It's a common tale in these Bosch 700/900 cars

In my case, the bad AMM was sending erratic signals, causing the car to run rich, tripping the lambda codes.

    For your reference, I have a 1994 940 Turbo
