P130 popout rear window seal install 120-130

I found the score of the year. I found a set of seals for the rear popout windows in great shape. I figure them a 8 or 9 out of 10. No cracking, rubber still soft, some paint overspray on the outside, some impressions from the latch, and a small chunk (smaller than 1/8 inch) of rubber missing around the latch area on each of them. I've never seen seals that weren't cracking before, so this was a great score!! The seals on my car are a 5 or 6.

From a '68 P130 that was totaled from a recent flood in the area (5 months ago-6 inches of mud in the inside of the car). Paid $10 for the seals and windows per set. The windows have the later latches, my car is a '66, and I have an extra set of windows with the correct latches for my car, but for $10, I couldn't go wrong.

The question is, how to install them. I did the stupid thing when I removed them and bent the metal frame on the bottom to get them out(because I wasn't going to leave them to investigate how to remove them correctly). The frames bent back without permanently damaging them (luck I guess). Looking at them now, that's not the correct way to remove or install them. Seems like the seals need to be installed from the inside of the car (rigid part of the seal is on the inside of the car), but what's the easiest way to install them? Install it by the bottom first, and work the rest in place or install the top and work the bottom in? Or is there a trick?

I don't think I'll find another set of seals in better shape again, unless I find some NOS or they start making new seals, and I don't want to use the fixed glass seals.

Paul

I am also looking for a good set of rear side window seals for a P130.

Actually two sets (two projects).

I thought I heard on this board that VP or Skandix would have them again soon. No?

LMK,

Roll on!

I recently unearthed a very very nice pair of these NLA hard to find 2Dr rear side window seals.

They are functionally perfect, without tears, cracks, kinks or bends,
Cosmetically they are 8/10, with some minor scuffing...With a bit of detailing they will be excellent.
I believe as nice a pair as you'll see these days. Picts easy if needed...

$300 including shipping a not-unreasonable distance.
That's what I'd pay if they were what I needed.

Hello Paul,

You have to install the 1/4 window seals like a front or rear windshield seal by using some thin rope in the mounting groove.

But instead of installing from the outside in as you do with the windshields, you have to install the 1/4 window seals from the inside out.

So you have to be inside the car holding the seal in place while someone outside the car pulls the rope.

Get the seals warm by setting them in the sun, use plenty of pure silicone spray and start by installing the rear ward side of the seal 1st.

Thanks Eric-

I was wondering if that was the way to install them. Easy enough to use the rope method.

Here's how I did it

Step zero: Remove the rear seat so you can get serious about the install.
Step one: Get a friend to help. Be prepared to buy beer later. You are in the car, the friend is out.
Step two: Put dish soap around the perimeter of the window seal where it intersects the pinched, spot welded sheet metal ridge defining the window opening. Forget the rope.
Step three: The Assistant firmly pushes the lower rear sharp-cornered part of the seal down and back into the window frame until it is fully seated.
Step four: While the assistance holds that firmly in position, lift up on the lower front corner until you can finally slide it down onto the pinched ridge and then down into its respective corner. Be exceptionally careful to protect the rubber flap on the leading edge of the window seal as you guide it inside the car.
Step five: Working with the assistant who holds the outer seal surface as you proceed, work the front vertical edge, bottom edge and arching top edge properly onto the pinched sheet metal defining the window. Use your thumbs and fingers to do so. Ignore the small cuts of skin.
Step six: You end up at the top front corner which has yet to seat. Then slowly manipulate the rubber seal into place as you work from the inside of the car. The Assistant will apply vigorous outside pressure to ensure every hard-earned mm stays in place as you work this last section.

P130 popout rear window seal install 120-130

My last "score of the year"" re: 130 rear window seals...

Six months ago I drug home and stripped a '69 2 Dr Amazon, B20/J-overdrive, built in NS, Canada...

It had been sitting behind a repair shop, under cover but on bare ground, for about 7 years because of non-payment of the repair bill for brake work...When parked, it had had it's engine/trans/OD recently rebuilt, what was once a very nice interior with nice chrome recliners, column ignition lock, correct OD switch/indicator, excellent under-dash pad and later steering wheel, cable clutch, etc. Frame was not worth saving, tho' the body panels were mostly in pretty good shape...

One of the last things that must have been done to the car before abandonment was to replace the rear window popout seals...Other than a scant amount of red overspray, and very slight latch impressions, they are virtually flawless, zero cracks, zero rubber damage, look "newish".

As I have no need for these now or in the foreseeable future, I would be happy to make them available to whoever has an interesting offer.

Thanks in advance,

Michael in NH

I, too would be interested in a better set of gaskets for my 130 rear pop-out windows. As always, you're best off buying the best car you can afford, but what's the fun in that? I'm only about $8,000.00 away from a pretty nice $4,500.00 car...
But, I am serious about the gaskets. Would one of the contestants here that has a set of gaskets contact me, please?

Sounds as good as it gets for these seals. I might be interested in them, and pass along the ones I just pulled.

Please email me. My email is: malloy1 at prodigy dot net
