Now Cat installed. Now check engine light on. 200

Why would the check engine light come on after a new Cat is installed? The old Cat was broken (as in severed) right after the first weld. The engine seems to running fine!
Is there a reset somewhere?
Diagnostics?
Thanks for your help.
LL the BB!

Need to know what year the car is. It may have diagnostics built on the car depending on the year.

You may have not hooked up the oxygen sensor.

It may or may not have been in the old converter.

Do you know where your oxygen sensor goes on this car?

Phil

Phil

For your future reference, only cars with OBD will have the check engine light.

This started in '89, with the introduction of LH 2.4.

Thanks Don for that information!

I always need that kind of stuff.

I do not know what years they started putting the O2 sensor into the converters either. That's why I asked if he knew the location of it besides the year of the car.

So the LH 2.4 must be the same year of the new Crank Position Sensor system if I am thinking correctly.

What later year did they do away with the cold start injectors?

I think my '91 still has one of those plus it's the first Volvo I have owned with an EGR. All my four cars are California originals and I have enjoyed knowing Volvo did not have to go that route for years.

IMHO they beat out the "domestic three" by running cleaner engines without one of those and no throttle body injection...Junkers!

Crank Position Sensor: You are thinking correctly.

Cold Start Injector: '93, I think. That's how it looks in the wiring diagrams, anyway.

1990 240 dl.
Yes, switched over O2 sensor with no problem. I installed that sensor about 100,000 miles ago, and it fit into the new Cat fine, although the "port" for it is in the forward section of pipe and not the Cat itself, as with the broken one.

What OBD codes do you have?
Dan

Haven't done OBD codes yet. My thinking is how many things could it be since I only made the one change.

Check engine light goes on due to faults the codes can give you clues as to what may be wrong with your engine. It may not be related to the cat change but it might be related to the O2 sensor or it may be totally unrelated. It is a tool for you to use and makes good sense to use all that is available to you to help solve problems.

Dan
