Wiper Motor 88 245 Dying or just pretending to die? 200 1988

Hi,

I'm looking for advice on my 88 Volvo 245 wagon. Wiper motor (from FCP Groton, 3 or 4 years old aftermarket, not OEM) seems to be dying. It still works on the fast speed', but is not doing anything on either intermittent or slow speed. No noise, nothing.

So is that symptomatic of a dying motor? Or is there anything I can troubleshoot before I look into replacing it? I usually by OEM parts but it was something like 100 vs 400 for a volvo motor so I went cheap figuring it would take my chances.

Thanks much,
Chet

"It still works on the fast speed', but is not doing anything on either intermittent or slow speed. No noise, nothing."

I'd be checking the switches and connections. The plug on the motor has 4 electrical contacts. Not all are for fast speed.

Art, can the case be removed to reglue magnets while the motor is still in the car? I have one that is slow and noisey. I had to re-install it after my new aftermarket one cracked a gear after 8 yrs. Im glad I kept it but didnt know about the loose magnets until after I re-installed the original motor. GRR.

I would suggest you disconnect the linkage at the motor shaft behind the glovebox, move the wipers by hand to be sure the binding isn't in the drive bushings, and run the motor without the linkage connected to see if it still seems labored.

Also Chet, curious what happened that you have succeeded Susan as LVCOA head? I consider myself a dues paying member. :)

Yeah we share this computer sometimes & she told me about Brickboard. I wondered why that showed up in my post. I'll have to use my own computer I guess so as not to confuse people. She's still in charge of the LVCOA. ;) Thanks - Chet.

Good to hear. I think my brain went from the subject line to a short list of bricksters themselves off to Valhalla of late, which seemed the only logical explanation for a new "emperor for life."
