Transmission Shift knob removal 200 1988

Need to replace the broken shift indicator body(tan color=peanut brittle) with a strong black one in perfect shape. Removing the knob may pull off the overdrive wires. Or is my 88 to old for the horror story or replacing the 940, found in the FAQ??

Just unplug the wires from the switch and pull them down, out and
out of the way before you pull the handle off the shift rod. The
way I have removed the knob is to put a pair of pipe pliers under
the knob and pound it upwards with a hammer until it pops off.

I saved this old post that illustrates your answer.
