240 Seat Belt Install 200 1983

Have new OEM Volvo seat belts to install in my 83 244, but they seem to come from the factory in a locked position. The belts don't move. Is there a release button or other adjustment to be made? Nothing appears obvious on the mechanisms. Thanks

I don't know if the new belts are locked for shipping -- but could it just be that the normal locking mechanism is in play? --the reel business has to be in somewhat of a normal straight up and down position for the inertia lock to be released. -- Dave

That's what I thought too - maybe they need to be in the proper vertical position - but they really do seem locked at the factory, maybe so they don't unravel during shipping?

I would think not, because the retraction spring is sufficient to keep them from unraveling in shipment. Volvo would not want you taking the covers off and messing with them, as I did on our '83: http://cleanflametrap.com/v83belt.html

But, suppose someone did. Found them locked because he didn't understand the acceleration lock required the position to be right. Tried to fix it. Took them back to the dealership for restocking...

Thanks Art for the link, first time I've seen one disassembled.

But I remain stumped- there must be something that releases the belt from the locked position.
