Radio code

Hi all,
My son drives my old 1994 960, he had to replace the radio, and just got it, but it does not have the code to activate it. The volvo dealer requires the vin# from the car. Well, the seller does not have that information. He did not think to ask before purchasing. Is he up a creek and out $45 or is there a work around?
Thanks for the any of your thoughts.

Just want to thank everyone for their responses. If went down just as John reported. Called dealer, they needed to know the Model# which is on the front side of the radio, part# which is on the label on the rear and the serial number also on the label.
There were also two 4 digit numbers on the label, but neither turned out to be the code.

Reference the previous reply from "john sergeant" - that's a good reply. I also had radio problems with the code - I had some body work done on my front right side. When I got the car back, the radio had been zeroed, as the battery had been disconnected. The body shop contacted Volvo and gave us the code (I had bought the car second hand and knew nothing about a radio code!). Since this time, I have changed car batteries, and Volvo radios myself - therefore I've dealt with radio codes. I have acquired 2 radios from salvage yards (pullapart & u-pull-it). The radios were 15 bucks both times. I did find the 4 digit radio code written in black ink on both radios. THIS IS VERY COMMON - Look on your radio for a 4-digit code number, and try entering this,...if that does not work, give the radio serial number to someone at ANY car dealership, (that will help you on this - like JOHN SERGEANT REPLY), and they should be able to get Volvo to yield the number. It should not cost you a cent!

Does the dealer know you? Go to one that does.

It is getting much harder to use parts that might be stolen.

I have two good sets of Volans, two sets of Argos, and one set of Hydras - the pick and pull that I have used for years will not buy or trade them unless I can turn them in with a car that has a good VIN!

I recently bought a used radio from a 960 in the Pick-n-Pull. I took the used radio to the local dealer's parts department. From the radio serial number they gave me the radio code without having to provide the VIN from the donor car. The dealer will also provide the radio code to independent Volvo repair shops with just the radio serial number.
