Transmission pan drain plug 200

My daughter just got an 88 244 non turbo and getting some things fixed for her. She currently drives our 1993 940 and anxious to get the 240 on the road. This car needs alot of love. The transmission fluid is brown and low. I drained the fluid and the plug came out hard. The plug threads are not nice and I have a new one coming in this afternoon. What size thread is this? If the new plug doesn't srew in easily I'm planning on retapping the pan threads. Thanks Matt

    Hello,
The plug is a metric 14mm size and the threaded end is a 10mm I believe.
the plug can be re-threaded using a tap obtained from a local hardware store- shouldn't be a problem, but easier said than done.
I've taken off the pan on my trans . maybe a half dozen times. After a while you do things without really thinking about them. Make sure you get a good copper washer to seal the plug when you replace it.
    Good luck.

I have to agree with the Joe the easiest way to change out/flush the transmission fluid is via the connection at the radiator.

However, I have to disagree with his suggestion that you go ahead and drop the pan to clean the screen. I used to do it that way but I never came across a screen that had anything to clean off.

IMO dropping the pan is a huge PITA because normally it requires taking the dipstick along for the ride. That means removing the bellhousing bolt that secures it and therein lies the pain.

Personally I would wrap that drainplug with teflon tape and snug it up and only look back once- to check for a possible leak.

I just picked up a new drain plug and seal and will be putting in tommorrow. I'm hoping this does the trick. My original question was thread size and the new bolt is 10mm x 1.5. The oil that came out of the pan was disgusting, brown and thick. My original plan was to drain the pan and remove so I can clean the pan. I'm reinstalling the plug and flushing by the radiator. That is how I did the 940. Thanks again for the replies. Matt

I don't know what size thread is on the original trans, but it's likely some odd Metric size/pitch, and finding a tap for it will probably cost a small fortune. Maybe someone on the board already has a metric tap for this and will let you borrow it instead of having to find one online and buy it just for one job.

Would you be able to used some thread sealant or teflon tape on the new plug and send it home, so to speak? Or maybe bump it up to the next NPT size and buy an off-the-shelf tap and plug?

I thought it was a "standard" metric thread because in the FAQ for the 700/900 it was posted a repair kit. If need be I will will use sealant but as a last resort. I wanted to drop the pan but and clean it but the dipstick fitting is fighting me. Thanks for the reply. Matt

Its unfortunate that you decided to drain the trans the hard way. The best way is too remove the return line(upper line form radiator) put a hose on it, into a bucket and start the car leave in neutral and let it pump a gallon out turn off fill and do it again and again until it runs pink. You only get about 3 qts from the pan. Install a magnefine in-line filter and never touch the pan or drain plug again. Your in now you should drop the pan and clean the screen.
