Tire recommendations: 195/65/15 (for 5.5 in rims) 120-130

All,

Sorry - need to repost with better subject line.

I am considering the VP 5.5 steel wheels and now looking into tires.
The VP tires come either with Cooper tires already mounted or bare.

My tire criteria:

1. 195/65/15
2. Sporting daily driver performance, but not racing.
3. Comfort
4. Quiet
5. Not more than about $150 each (I'd like less)

QUESTIONS:

1. Anyone have experience with Cooper tires?
2. Any other brands / models to recommend?

Thanks,

Nat

    Hello All,

Goodyear Eagle RS-A II are the best tires I've run to date for all season performance. Mind you I don't drive the 120 in the snow; but I did drive my 855 in the snow and it was great. Wet, dry. Really great. V rated stop on a dime. They have lasted longer than the Toyos, and Korean performance tires I've run in the past.

The first set came with a pair of adidas driving shoes to boot! They no longer come with the shoes, but the are great quality and usually under $150. Taxi cabs and police use them in Philly. Made in Germany.

    Best of luck

      sorry, I couldn't help it 120-130

As for a tire recommendation--the mention of Michelin XZX reminded me of the French cars I used to work on--many using the XZX--if the Coker version is as good as the original you can't go wrong. -- Dave

If your budget is 150 per tire I would keep your original rims (if they are in good shape) and put on some 165 15 Michelins XZX ($160),, they last forever!!!

or the Vredestein Sprints 165/15 that run around 100 bucks....

That is the original tire measurement for the Amazon rims.

I think Cooper is a fairly good choice, not the worst, nor the best. Irv Gordon uses Bridgestones on his 3 million mile 1800, and gets close to 100k miles out of them. Like they say, you get what you pay for.

205/60x15 use to be a hugely popular size back in the day and therefore have a much wider variety. I like cheap Firestones for general purpose & dirt roads, Falkens I like when I want good ones.

Can you get those rims in 7"? 5.5 is not enough for 195mm, just too wobbly. A thinner tyre on a 5.5" rim would corner as good as while being better elsewhere.

Probably not the best out there, but I've had good luck with Cooper CS4T and Weathermaster tires.
    I prefer a taller tire (195-75x15) too.
