Does anyone have a step by step idea of how to remove the starter on the /89 240DL 4 door stick shift? It sounds so involved on some of the web sites and we really need the right info. to remove it. We will have to take it somewhere I imagine to check it out to make sure that is what it is. Had one starter replacement about 30,000k ago. That was in 2001. It was an actual Volvo part but that is all we got out of it.

I've cracked the top bolt loose from the top because I tried it that way first... but really, as Adirondack Blue says: 1/2 drive long extensions and a Universal Socket or a universal on the end of a socket. 3/8th drive tools will just flex, you need a bit more ummph by using the 1/2" drive stuff. Long extensions so you are almost at the back of the Trani feeding it in.

Thought I'd put in my 2 cents since I did this pretty recently with hand tools on an 89 with a manual transmission. I had no luck with the extra long extensions.

The top bolt I ended up getting from above. I got a wrench in behind the two coolant hoses that go through the firewall and down on to the top bolt and gave a good two handed yank.

The lower bolt I ended up getting with no extensions! There was enough room to sneek a half inch breaker bar up past the end of the clutch cable. I'm guessing that this is impossible on an automatic and that's why people recommend the extensions.

    Good luck.

Starter on a 240 is not that hard, due to easy access from underneath. However, access to the 18mm bolts (two) is the trick. I have done a starter roadside by rolling the driver's side front wheel up onto a ramp -- gives you plenty of room to work. You will need a large 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar with a universal joint and about 36" of extensions. I think I use a 24" and 12", but they might be shorter. You snake that mess up to the bolts and use the breaker bar from way back by the driveshaft center support bearing. Impact tools make it much easier, but you can break 'em loose just fine with a breaker bar.

    Good luck.

Wish I could help you on the stick and all, but this is really geared to someone who is already familiar with these cars...

Work safely if you decide to attempt this yourself.

Some people say “If you can’t beat them, join them”. I say “If you can’t beat them, beat them”, because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.
