93 240 instrument cluster spring issue 200 1993

I removed my 93 240 instrument cluster so I could change the broken trip reset button. When I had it out, I saw a small spring fall out.

I believe this hooks on the bottom of a small circuit board on the left side of the odometer - this is what I'm seeing: On the 93, there is a button in the far right hand corner. It has a plastic sleeve on it (when it is inside the full instrument cluster housing), so you need to push something through that to actually push the button in. It is connected to a lever on the back side of the panel. The mechanism will push a switch up and looks to dis-engage a black and white cog gear that would otherwise be engaged with a blue spindle on the left side of the odometer gears that are black, red and blue. Do you know what that button is for? and what that whole setup is?

As I said before, I took the instrument panel out to replace a broken trip reset push button and a tiny spring fell out. In examining the board, I believe that spring is used to hold that white and black circle gear in an engaged position. I also think this is where the spring goes b/c there is a screw on the bottom of the board the white and black gear is on that sticks out a bit and would be a wonderful place to hold the end loop of the spring. I'd like to put that spring back on, but need to know that this is the correct place (I figure it would just connect to the other circuit board next to this mechanism (looks a little warn on top where the spring might have been resting.

Hopefully, for those that are familiar with a 93 instrument cluster, I've explained this well enough and you will know what I'm looking at, and you will be able to advise me as to what this white and black cog wheel is doing, what that "reset" button is for in the far lower RH corner and if that is the correct place for the little spring.

The spring is part of the mileage counter mechanism for the service light. Most of us disable this or pull the bulb when it fails. If you would need to restore the 5K mile service light function, you'll need to fix the broken spring stud.

Note these pics are of an earlier cluster, before the airbag cars made it necessary to put the service reset on the front panel with the tube and cable actuator you see. Before those, you would have to reach under the dash and find the black lever.

Excellent. I don't have any need for the 5k service light to come on. So I'll ignore that and just reassemble everything. Good to know! That is the kind of news I was hoping for! Thanks for the quick response also.

The 5,000 mile service light will continue to come on unless you remove the bulb. Before you put the cluster back into the dash take a look at that black reset switch so that you can hopefully remember where it is behind the cluster, so that when the 5,000 mile service light comes you can just reach up behind the cluster to switch the switch. Or you can pull the cluster out to hit the switch.

Too bad Volvo didn't realize that we would love our cars so much that we would change the oils/filter every 3,000 miles and Volvo could of made that a 3,000 mile service light.
