Took Volvo out today. Been in garage for a year and out once or twice in that time. It quit while shopping. Boost did nothing. Dead on the key. it is standard and a quick pull and pop the clutch and away we went. Lights, horn and all work, so we think it is the battery. Could it be anything else? like a selinoid, not sure how to spell it. It is 240DL std. 4 door and 400,000K on it. Passes e-test with flying colours so we want to fix it and have it around for a few years yet.

    Solar Battery Charger 200 1989

"so we think it is the battery"

Auto batteries tend to die if left for long periods to drain. I've found trickle charging keeps them alive for years(?).

I've got solar panels currently keeping two batteries, in 2 unused cars, charged. They're ready to start if needed.

I've even got one on the dash of my daily driver that's wired in to continuously charge (the clock runs with the battery disconnected).

    eg. http://www.harborfreight.com/15-watt-solar-battery-charger-68692.html

Burn the fuel out of it and add fresh. Change the rest of the fluids too, if it's in the budget.

As for the dying - did the car stall out, or did it just not start? Did it start at home? If you got absolutely nothing - no cranking at all - I would suspect a clutch safety switch. I think the 89's had that. My 84 most definitely did NOT have one.

    Good Luck!
