has this ever happened to anyone? 200

a 240 5 speed wagon has come my way with a problem which is worthy of click and clack radio program.

1. within the past month a good used 5 speed box was obtained from a reputable shop and installed in this wagon along with a brand new clutch

2. the car drove and shifted just fine

3. a week or so ago the car was idling in the driveway with the owner and his friend trying to ascertain and fix a higher than normal idle.

4. the friends large dog was in the car and as dogs do got rambunctious and caused the shifter to engage into one of the gears where upon the car stalled out.

5. no the dog did not use the clutch before engaging the shifter........LOL

6. the car now starts just fine but the shifter won't move and appears to be stuck in 4th.

7. the owner has quit on this car and it has come to me

ideas? as to what occured?

FWIW, these are the present symptoms 200

too cold yet to pull the trans out of the car.

    1. with clutch let up and shifter in neutral and engine running the output shaft spins commensurate with the idle

    2. with shifter in 1, 2nd, 5th or reverse and clutch let up the engine will stall if running

    3. 3rd and 4th are hard to engage consistently but will also stall the engine with clutch let up

the front half of the driveshaft has been removed from the transmission for these tests.

po owner stated he changed the plate and disc but not the throwout bearing

Sounds like something failed on the 3/4 shift collar, and is jamming the input and output shafts firmly together. Which is basically 1:1 ratio, how 4th gear works.

It's almost certainly not economically viable to fix the M47, best bet would be to find another M47 and install it. Although if you've got the time, I'd pull the trans and take the top off and see what's going on before buying the new one. It's faintly possible that whatever wrong is fixable - perhaps the shifter fork popped loose from the shifter rod (it's held in place with a rolled spring pin).

FWIW Not a 240 tranny guy, however, worked many manual transmissions. If it is stuck in the fourth gear shift position, the syncro yoke has probably busted and jammed in between so you cannot move it. The syncro can be in the neutral position, but if the yoke ears are out of the grove and on each side, it could give you the jammed symptom you describe. Pull the cover and look, at least you can see the insides work unlike an automatic.

the transmission will now shift into 1rst, 2nd, sometimes 3rd but not 4th or 5th but will go into reverse.

if the shifter is in neutral with the clutch released there is the sound of what to me sounds likes a pilot bearing and or throw out bearing hanging up.

Yup, sounds like a throw out bearing problem. Never heard a bad pilot bearing but I imagine it sounds similar. Do you know if the pilot and throw out bearings were changed with the new clutch? Did somebody overlook that?

the kid said he changed the clutch with his friend, he really could not name the parts they installed. at this point the transmission has to come out on the first day here thats higher than 32 degrees.

my hope is the trouble lies with the throwout bearing and or other clutch components and NOT the box itself.

it seems hard to believe a transmission could be destroyed by having the shifter inadvertently put into gear without the clutch at 1000 rpm idle, stalling immediately.

Given that you stated the only gears that are affected are 3,4,5 I do not believe your problem is the throwout bearing or pilot. Possible broken shift fork may be the issue. Before pulling trans, inspect linkage while having someone work the shifter. Make sure gear oil is full, although if that were the case it should affect all gears. Good luck and keep us posted!

If the clutch isn't completely disengaging when the pedal is depressed would the symptoms be the same? (Sorry haven't thought it out.) ie. Would adjusting the clutch play make a difference?

Will the shifter move with the car off? Does the clutch work? Maybe the gearbox wasn't as good as you guys thought. Maybe the shift linkage is broken.

Play around with it and see what you can see. Maybe lift/remove the rubber boot to see what's going on when you try to shift gears? We need more information.
