s90 engine running rough S90-V90

After cold start a pronounced squeak rang out similar to slipping belt and then grinding sound developed aggravating to crackling in 30 smiles through clenched teeth. Something is about to go, but in what section. A starter, timing or someth else?

After long winter eventually had the opportunity to get back to the car. Took it to mechanic, since i don't have a car bay, and he diagnosed the bad starter. He also agreed to me bringing my own part since i didn't feel comfortable with the brands he offered.

So i went for a Bosch SR0436X, however to my surprise he said he pulled out a different core which is an inch and a half smaller and according to its serial number 0-001-115-002 should belong to the Volvo S80 model. Now he says he is unable to put my Bosch in. I double checked everything but the core he gave me does look exactly like this http://www.motorcityreman.com/booe049.html and is different to SR0436X not only in size but shape.

I have a full service record for the car and it doesn't read starter change, and also the car should be completely stock. So now i think how it may require part other than the OEM?

Figured it out -- it's likely a mistake from Bosch that refers to SR0436X as a starter for s90, whereas in fact it's for earlier 960 and 850 models. The correct number should be SR0435X.

That sounds similar to how our V90 sounded when the starter failed. What happened in my case was the starter pinion did not fully retract, the screeching you hear is actually the starter pinion hitting the ring gear on the flex plate! Ours did this intermittently at first, and then more frequently until I finally figured it out. I initially misdiagnosed it as belt tensioner and pulley noise. Only after changing tensioner and idler pulley, and subsequent complaints from driving wife, did I realize the problem was not fixed.

Does it happen right after starting the car? Does it sometimes go away entirely?

Listen from under the car near the bell housing and you may hear a metallic clanging/scraping sound.

Replacing the starter on a S/V90 isn't the most fun job I've ever done, but it is fairly straight-forward. I did mine from underneath the car, without pulling the intake manifold.

The sound developed rather gradually starting from light grinding sometimes resembling a water flow through a pipeline. It seemed fading away with the engine warming up. Then after a start in the cold heard a wild squeak and the engine didn't run smoothly since then, warm or cold. The crackling has aggravated.

I checked the timing area a couple of miles ago, nothing suspicious was found.

Read it's too soon for the water pump to end its life. However i've already ordered a timing kit, but guess a new starter is gonna be on its way also. Is a genuine part a must or there are good aftermarket alternatives?

I used a rebuilt Bosch unit. I would listen in the bell housing area to verify this is the source of the noise.

Also remove the serpentine belt and check all accessories and idler pulleys for smooth operation. Also consider replacing serpentine belt tensioner if operation is suspect.

Spray some water on the pulleys when running and see if the noise changes if so thats the problem one. Take of the timing cover next and do the same. remember if that timing belt brakes an engine rebuild will be on the cards. Check water pump and tensioner pulley

That's why i'm afraid to start it another time, maybe makes sense to change timing preventively first, as service book records belt, pulleys and tensioner change at 70K but not the WP. Now car has 106

The video sounds to me like something in the serpentine belt system - perhaps the bearings in the idler or in the pulley on the tensioner. Those are the least expensive options! Then we start looking at the alternator or the PS pump.

A slight possibility is a small piece of gravel trapped in the shield around the timing belt's crank pulley and scraping on the torsional damper on the front of the crankshaft .

I bought one of those mechanic's stethoscopes and it has been very useful in tracking down noises like that. The thing was only about $6.
