coolant capacity 700

I have just replaced the coolant in two 940's. One had a new pump, one had a radiator. The rads and blocks were totally drained.
We put in one bottle of antifreeze and one bottle of distilled water in each, and both are at the full mark. So that's 8 qts, and not the 10 qts every book I have seen says should be in there. There cannot be that much in the heater core, so...
???

    Hello,
depends here on the size of the antifreeze container- if it is the Penta liquid it's slightly less than 2qt. The Volvo liquid is 3.78 liters, so you may not be using a full two gallons.
The recommended fill for my '89 740 Sedan and '91 940 Sedan is 7 liters.
It works out to be about that when I change the fluids. Have to be aware too that the engine has to "burp" since there is always an air pocket in the block. I drive the car about 3/4 miles and then check the expansion tank. If it's empty I just add about another liter and it remains constant for a while. I add liquid about every two weeks if I drive distance. I always use distilled water, because tap water has mineral in it that can cause electrolysis in the block, aluminum or metal.

    Hoe this helps.

Same here. Always a litre/quart or two less than spec no matter how well it seems to be drained. So I always put in half of the claimed capacity using pure antifreeze. then top up with water. After a lot of heat/cooldown cycles a test shows the mix is only slightly above 50%. So either the capacity spec is wrong or those missing litres are well hidden.

I always experience similar on my coolant changes. What you added was 50/50 so you're good.

If I am changing just to change coolant, I drain and fill with water. I let it mix, drain one more time then add 5 quarts of pure coolant and fill the rest with water.
