940 Expansion Tank Interchange / Compatability? 900 1994

So, I pulled the leaky radiator and all the hoses today as well as the thermostat and expansion tank. Lo and behold the nipple on the bottom of the expansion tank is busted (thermostat was stuck open as well but I expected that).

I'm headed to the pick and pull yard to look for a good condition replacement. From what I can tell from the parts catalog the following all fit, but I am hoping there might also be others?

1991-1995 940 turbo and na both
1991-1996 960 turbo and na both
1997-1998 S90 and V90

Are there others that will work? Any 740 tanks maybe? These models above are rare in our wreck yards.

Here's the busted tank I pulled from my 940:

Oh and just for good measure, here's the thermostat stuck open (it was 55f. outside when I took this pic)

Late 740s will also work, 1989-1992.

Dear tedv,

Hope you're well. According to Volvo VADIS - the superseded dealer parts/service database - the "rectangular" coolant expansion tank used in 940s was used only in '92 740s. That is part #9122997.

If I recall correctly, the last 740 was made at end-June 1992. Earlier 740s have a coolant expansion tank that is "tubular" in cross section. This is part #3547466.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Correct. 1992+ 700/900 series use the rectangular coolant reservoir. Every 960 I have seen has the float in the reservoir, for coolant loss.

Dear DrCheap,

Hope you're well. You've listed all of the models, which have the same coolant overflow tank, as does your car.

Coolant overflow tanks from 1996 and later 960s/S/V/90 will have the sensor, that can be connected to your instrument cluster, to show the level of coolant in the tank. This is a helpful upgrade.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Every 960 I have seen, has the float and switch in the reservoir for indicating coolant loss. For many years we owned a 1986 745T which was European delivery. It had the wiring for the coolant loss sensor installed at the factory, but no float and switch in the reservoir. When I installed a 960 coolant reservoir in that car, all I had to do was connect to the two wires already present neat the coolant reservoir, and install the lamp in the instrument cluster.
