Speedo/Tach go dead when lights/dimmer switch turned on 200

I was removing my 52mm clock the other day (with the negative battery cable removed) when I got distracted by the fact that the new clock I was going to swap in had a different bulb base. I went inside to look up the difference when my girlfriend came home. I was blocking the garage, and not wanting to make the lady wait I hooked up the negative cable and moved the car. In my rush I forgot to insulate the two wires that run to the small clock. Not sure if they touched at any point when I was moving the car, but, I thought it may be pertinent.

I ended up not installing the new clock and thus removed the connector wires from the large tach to the small clock, but removed no other wires. When I went to start up my car again I had no tach and no speedo movement –– they were both dead. Additionally, both the lights to the turn signals were lit permanently. The fuel gauge and temp gauge both worked fine.

If I turn off the headlights the tach and speedo spring to life. And, if I have the headlights switched on but the rheostat/dimmer switched turned all the way off I have full instrument functionality as well.

I've been struggling to understand how to attack this. I've checked/swapped fuses, and cleaned grounds, and all appear to be okay. I've checked the boards, but all I can find on the subject pertain specifically to the temp/fuel gauges.

Would touching the two small clock wires together cause this issue? Or was it just coincidence?

And, how is the rheostat involved? I've gone over the wiring diagrams in both the Bentley and here –– Volvo Wiring Diagrams –– and I understand that the rheostat connects via the brown wire to the circular connector on the back of the cluster (connection 10) and that goes to the tach/speedo/turn signals, which are all the components I'm having issues with. What I suppose I'm lost on is why turning it off causes function to be restored?

I have a working backup cluster that I could try, but, I don't want to install it incase the existing issue is persistent and will fry it as well.

Any thoughts/directions on how to approach this would be appreciated! Thanks!

Without doing a detailed probing of the various exposed contacts on the cluster circuit board with the unit under power, your best chance to find the open circuit foil is to remove the unit and examine it under a strong light. Some disassembly required.

Everyone is different, but I would much prefer to fix my damaged one than to find a replacement. The devil you know...

Mine is a 92, Art. And I'm with you –– I'd rather fix this than buy a whole new set of problems with another used.

When looking at it under a strong light, I assume I'm looking for burnt or clearly broken connections between the sequential order above?

      Thanks for the quick response!

No, the list of checkpoints on those two pics has little to do with your symptoms. They were listed for tracing the gauge voltage which powers the warning lights and gauges, and more importantly for the help intended at the time, the alternator exciter circuit.

I think you are looking for something that took out a ground trace given the behavior you describe. You'll either see it, or you'll have to trace the paths using your wiring diagram and a test light. If you do decide to grab another cluster, only 92 and 93 fit.

Edit: I missed your line about already having a spare cluster. If me, I'd be very confident the trouble is a burned circuit trace on the cluster board, which would not recur with a replacement cluster -- unless, of course, the clock wires are still shorted.

I disassembled the cluster and found the culprit. As originally suspected by Art, there was a part of the board that was clearly blown and can be seen below.

As part of my new years resolution, anytime I get help here on Brickboard that resolves my problem I'm donating 5 bucks to the site. Art earned the first $5. Thanks again for the help, Art!

As per your advice I put in the spare cluster –– the problem didn't reoccur with the spare, so likely it took out the ground trace as you suggested.

I have the blown cluster on the bench and am getting ready to check it out now. I will report back with what I find. Thanks!
