Remove 1800 Fuel Tank 1800 1973

73 1800ES: I need to remove and clean out the gas tank in route to starting a long-sitting car. I have limited tools and space to work. I'm not at the car right now to look at it. What's involved to R&R the tank? Does it lift out the top like a 140?

How long's she been sitting? Drain the tank (7/16" wrench), and drain the fuel system (pull the line off the fuel rail, run the pump).

Then put in new gas and be done. Hopefully.

Cost difference between a running car and a non-running car shouldn't be all that much. Maybe $100. Not a huge amount of money considering the work that might be involved to make it run.

If you just need to move the car onto a trailer, I would not pull the gas tank.

I would use a fuel can, some fuel hose and a new or known working fuel pump. If the car has been sitting, the fuel pump most likely won't work, especially if it a long sitting electric fuel pump.

Don't forget to bring enough fuel hose to run both supply and return hoses to the fuel can.

Eric,

I considered doing that. The problem is that I am contracted to a transport company that will be loading/unloading the car, possibly multiple times during the trip. The car has to be able to start to get on the transport. I'm leary of having the temporary can setup in this situation.

Well, maybe........... Do those cars have a rubber plug in the spare tire well that would be able to pass a couple 1/2" hoses? Just thinking.
